AutoCAD Tip: Master Lightweight Polylines for Efficient AutoCAD Drafting

Lightweight polylines are one of the most practical drawing objects in AutoCAD because they combine multiple connected segments into a single, efficient object. Whether you are drafting floor plans, site boundaries, schematic routes, or fabrication profiles, using a lightweight polyline instead of separate lines and arcs makes editing faster, improves drawing organization, and helps maintain geometric continuity.

Create a lightweight polyline with the PLINE command. Unlike the LINE command, which creates each segment as an independent object, PLINE creates one connected object that can contain straight and arc segments, widths, and variable widths.

  • Type PLINE and select the first point.
  • Continue selecting points to create connected straight segments.
  • Enter A for the Arc option when a curved segment is needed.
  • Enter L to return to straight-line mode.
  • Enter C to close the polyline by connecting the last point to the starting point.
  • Press Enter to finish the object without closing it.

A key advantage of lightweight polylines is that you can assign a width directly while drawing. At the PLINE prompt, use the Width option and specify a starting and ending width. Equal values create a consistent-width path, while different values create a tapered segment. This is useful for diagrammatic piping, road layouts, arrows, and presentation graphics.

For accurate drafting, combine PLINE with AutoCAD’s precision tools:

  • Use Object Snaps to connect to exact endpoints, midpoints, intersections, and centers.
  • Use Ortho Mode or Polar Tracking to maintain controlled directions.
  • Enter relative coordinates, such as @120,0, for a precise horizontal segment.
  • Enter polar coordinates, such as @75<45, to define a length and angle in one entry.

After creating a polyline, use PEDIT to make more advanced edits. The command allows you to modify vertices, insert new vertices, change widths, convert segments between lines and arcs, reverse direction, and join compatible objects. The Join option is especially valuable when a design was drawn as separate lines and arcs but needs to become one continuous boundary.

Closed polylines deserve special attention. A properly closed polyline can be used as a reliable boundary for hatching, area calculations, regions, extrusions, and the PRESSPULL command. Before proceeding, select the object and confirm in the Properties palette that the polyline is marked as Closed: Yes. Visually connected endpoints do not always mean the object is mathematically closed.

Use the Properties palette to refine a selected lightweight polyline without redrawing it. You can adjust:

  • Layer, color, linetype, and lineweight
  • Global width and elevation
  • Closed or open status
  • Linetype generation for continuous linetype patterns around corners
  • Individual vertex positions through grip editing

When editing with grips, select the polyline once to display its vertices. Click a grip and move it, enter a coordinate, or use the grip menu to stretch, add, or remove vertices. This is often quicker than recreating complex outlines.

For better drawing performance and cleaner files, favor lightweight polylines over collections of separate segments whenever the geometry represents one continuous feature. They reduce object counts, simplify selection, and make downstream operations more predictable.
