Revit Tip: Compact Revit Central to Reduce File Bloat

Keep your workshared model fast and stable: regularly Compact the Central and apply a few maintenance habits to reduce file bloat, rebuild indexes, and cut Sync with Central times.

Why compacting the Central matters

  • Rebuilds and defragments the RVT database, often reducing file size.
  • Improves Save/Synchronize performance by cleaning internal indices.
  • Lowers risk of corruption from long-running sessions and heavy editing.
  • Pairs well with Purge, Resolve Warnings, and link cleanup for a lean model.

When to do it

  • After major deletes, large purges, or phase changes.
  • Following upgrades to a new Revit version.
  • Weekly/biweekly on large teams or long-lived projects.
  • When Sync with Central slows noticeably or locals grow very large.

Pre-flight checklist (file-based worksharing)

  • Notify the team; schedule a short maintenance window.
  • All users: Synchronize with Central, Relinquish All, and close Revit.
  • Archive a copy of the current Central and critical links.
  • Confirm you have exclusive access to the Central file location.

How to compact the Central (file-based)

  • Open the Central RVT with:
    • Detach from Central = ON (Preserve Worksets).
    • Audit = ON.
  • Once open: File > Save As > Project.
    • Options: check “Compact File.”
    • Set backups for Central (10–20 is common).
    • Save over the existing Central or save as a new Central (recommended for safer rollback).
  • Close the model. Instruct all users to delete old locals and create fresh locals from the updated Central.

Cloud worksharing (Autodesk Construction Cloud/BIM 360)

  • Platform services handle much of the compaction. If performance degrades:
    • Open a recent local cache, Detach from Central, Audit = ON.
    • Save As Cloud Model to the same project (new name), then have the team create new cloud locals.
    • Archive or retire the prior cloud model.

Extra model-health actions to pair with compaction

  • Purge Unused (in stages), then compact.
  • Resolve critical warnings (especially constraints and highlights that impact regeneration).
  • Unload or remove stale links; verify shared coordinates are correct.
  • Clean up Design Options, Worksets, and large groups.
  • Review imports; replace heavy CAD with curated links.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Compacting while anyone is connected to the Central.
  • Skipping Audit on long-running, complex projects.
  • Reusing old locals after the Central has been compacted/rebuilt.
  • Saving with too few backups for the Central.
