Revit Tip: Analytical Spaces Setup and QA for Accurate Revit Energy and HVAC Models

Set up Spaces correctly

  • Prefer Spaces over Rooms for MEP models. In Analyze > Energy Settings, set “Use” to Spaces if MEP owns the analysis; use Rooms if the architectural model is the single source of truth.
  • Enable accurate volumes: Manage > Project Units and Calculations > Area and Volume Computations = Areas and Volumes.
  • Make the envelope room-bounding: ensure Walls, Roofs, Floors, and Links are Room Bounding (check Type properties and Link instance properties).
  • Place Spaces (Analyze > Space), then set Upper Limit and Limit Offset so each Space reaches the actual ceiling/roof. Use Space Separation Lines for open areas.
