V-Ray Tip: V-Ray Production Render Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Quick triage
    • Black frame? Verify camera exposure (ISO/F‑stop/Shutter), enabled lights, and that GI is on.
    • Wrong colors or contrast? Confirm OCIO/ACES and VFB color management; display LUTs should not bake into Beauty unless intended.
    • Unit scale check: work in real‑world units; extreme scene scales break lighting, DOF, and displacement.
    • Normals: fix inverted or doubled faces; enable backface culling to spot issues fast.
    • Missing assets: resolve red/black textures and proxy paths; review V-Ray log for warnings.
  • Clean images faster (noise and fireflies)
    • Lower Noise Threshold moderately (e.g., 0.01–0.02) before cranking max samples.
    • Set Max Ray Intensity (e.g., 10–20) to tame hot pixels; use Color Mapping “Clamp output” only if you accept reduced HDR range.
    • Soften tiny speculars: avoid unrealistically sharp/glossy materials and tiny, very intense light sources.

  • Materials, geometry, and scale gotchas
    • Refraction blacking out? Raise reflection/refraction depth (8–16), ensure solid glass volumes, correct IOR, and avoid coplanar faces.
    • Textures: use linear (RAW) for data maps (roughness, normals, displacement), sRGB for albedo; prefer mip-mapped V-Ray bitmaps.
    • Displacement: choose 2D vs 3D wisely; control Edge Length and Max Subdivs; clamp extreme height values.
    • SSS and volumes: reduce scatter depth/radius, limit lights affecting volumes, and cache where possible for animation.
    • Nested dielectrics: apply proper priority/“affect shadows” settings to avoid dark glass-on-liquid artifacts.
  • Lighting and camera sanity
    • Match real units: use lumens/candela/nits consistently; avoid mixing arbitrary and photometric scales.
    • HDRI: ensure correct gamma, rotation, and intensity; consider a separate directional light to sharpen sun shadows.
    • GI baseline: Brute Force + Light Cache is robust; use Camera Path for LC on camera moves to reduce flicker.
    • DOF/MBlur: both add noise—reserve for finals; validate with region renders first.
  • Debug, comp, and handoff
    • Material Override to isolate lighting; disable override for glass/emissive where needed.
    • LightMix and Light Select AOVs to rebalance without re-rendering.
    • Export multi-channel EXR with Cryptomatte, Denoiser data, and core lighting/shading AOVs.
    • Profile bottlenecks: check VFB stats and logs; isolate heavy lights/materials via region renders.
