Cinema 4D Tip: Procedural Text Reveals with MoText, Cloners, and Fields

Text reveals are a core motion-graphics technique: simple enough to build quickly, yet flexible enough for polished titles, product messaging, and social content. In Cinema 4D, the most reliable approach combines MoText, a Cloner, and Fields so the animation remains procedural and easy to art-direct.

Start by creating a MoText object and entering your copy in the Text field. Choose a legible font, give the letters enough depth for your camera angle, and add a small bevel if highlights are important. For a clean reveal, the goal is not merely to make letters appear—it is to create a controlled transition in position, scale, opacity, or all three.

  • Place the MoText object under a Cloner.
  • Set the Cloner’s mode to Sort to distribute clones by letter order.
  • Add a Plain Effector to the Cloner.
  • In the Plain Effector, enable a transform such as Position Y, Scale, or Rotation.

For example, move each letter downward on the Y axis and reduce its scale slightly. Without a Field, the effector affects every letter at once. To turn this into a reveal, open the Plain Effector’s Fields tab and add a Linear Field. Position the field so it travels across the word from left to right. As it passes through the letters, the effector’s influence changes, revealing the final text state in sequence.

For a classic “build-on” animation, use these practical settings:

  • Plain Effector Position Y: approximately -100 to -300 cm, depending on scene scale.
  • Scale: around -0.3 to -0.8 for a subtle pop-in effect.
  • Linear Field Direction: align it with the reading direction of the text.
  • Field Falloff: increase it for a softer, more elegant transition; reduce it for sharper letter-by-letter timing.
  • Field animation: keyframe the Linear Field’s position rather than individual letters.

A key production benefit of this setup is that the text remains editable. Change the wording, font, spacing, or extrusion depth, and the reveal continues to work. This is especially useful when clients request copy revisions late in a project.

To make the result feel less mechanical, add a Delay Effector after the Plain Effector. Set it to Spring mode for a restrained overshoot, or use Blend mode for softer interpolation. Keep the strength low: excessive spring movement can make professional typography feel unstable. A Random Effector can also introduce slight rotation or position variation, but subtlety matters. Tiny offsets create energy; large offsets reduce readability.

For more advanced reveals, use a Shader Field with animated noise or a spline-based Field to control exactly where the animation begins. You can also animate a material’s alpha or opacity alongside the clone transformation for a more cinematic dissolve. When using Redshift, consider driving the material opacity through a vertex map or animated mask for precise control.

Preview frequently from the final camera. A text reveal can look excellent in the editor viewport but feel too slow, too abrupt, or poorly framed once viewed through the intended shot. Use the Timeline’s F-Curve mode to refine the Linear Field’s motion with ease-in and ease-out curves.
