AutoCAD Tip: Automatically Create and Update Sheet Lists in AutoCAD

Creating a sheet list automatically in AutoCAD helps keep project documentation accurate, coordinated, and ready for issue. Instead of manually typing sheet numbers and titles into a table, use the Sheet Set Manager to generate a live list from the sheets already included in your set.

This is especially valuable on multi-sheet projects, where late additions, renumbering, or title revisions can quickly make a manually maintained cover sheet unreliable. AutoCAD sheet lists use sheet set properties, so they can be updated whenever the project changes.

  • Start with a properly organized sheet set. Open the Sheet Set Manager with the SHEETSET command. Confirm that every layout intended for issue has been imported or created as a sheet within the correct sheet set.
  • Complete the sheet properties first. Right-click each sheet in Sheet Set Manager and select Properties. Verify the sheet number and sheet title. These values supply the information that appears in the automatic sheet list.
  • Use consistent numbering conventions. Numbers such as A0.01, A1.01, A1.02, and so on are easier to sort and review than improvised numbering. Establish the convention before issuing the first set, then apply it consistently.
  • Create a dedicated cover-sheet table. Open the layout where the sheet index belongs, typically the cover sheet or general-information sheet. From Sheet Set Manager, right-click the sheet set name and choose Insert Sheet List Table.
  • Choose the correct scope. AutoCAD can create a list for all sheets in the set, or only sheets within a selected subset. Subsets are useful when a project has separate architectural, structural, civil, or issued-package groups.
  • Configure columns intelligently. Typical columns include sheet number, sheet title, and revision-related information. Keep the list concise; it should help readers navigate the set rather than duplicate every available property.
  • Place the resulting table carefully. Insert it in a clear, readable location within the title-block area or drawing index area. Check that the table style, text height, row spacing, and plot appearance comply with your office standards.

The key benefit is that the table is linked to the sheet set rather than behaving like ordinary static text. When a sheet is added, removed, renamed, or renumbered, right-click the sheet list table and choose Update Sheet List Table. Make this a standard pre-plot and pre-publish step.

For even better coordination, combine automatic sheet lists with fields in your title blocks. Sheet number, sheet title, project name, current sheet total, and issue information can all be driven by Sheet Set Manager properties. This reduces repetitive editing and helps prevent the classic problem of a title block showing an obsolete sheet title.

Before publishing, perform a quick quality-control review:

  • Confirm every intended layout appears in the Sheet Set Manager.
  • Check that no placeholder sheets remain in the list.
  • Update the sheet list table after all revisions.
  • Review sorting order and confirm sheet numbers are unique.
  • Use Plot Preview or publish to PDF to verify table readability at printed scale.

Automatic sheet lists are a small setup investment with a significant return: fewer document-control errors, faster revisions, and more dependable drawing packages.
