AutoCAD Tip: Quickly Restore True Top View with PLAN

Keep your view orthographic and aligned in seconds by mastering the PLAN command.

PLAN restores a true top (plan) view relative to either the current User Coordinate System (UCS) or the World Coordinate System (WCS). It’s the fastest way to “square up” a skewed drawing, align a viewport for annotation, or reset after 3D orbiting—without rotating geometry.

  • Command: PLAN
  • Options: Current (default) or World
  • Where it works: Model space and inside an active paper space viewport

Essential workflows:

  • Align to project axes: Set your UCS (e.g., UCS > Object), then run PLAN to view orthographically to that UCS for clean drafting and dimensioning.
  • Return to global orientation fast: Type PLAN then W to snap back to true-top WCS—ideal when a file “looks rotated.”
  • Viewport cleanup: Activate a viewport, run PLAN (Current or World), lock the scale, then annotate with confidence.
  • After 3D orbit: Use PLAN to drop back to a non-perspective top view aligned to your active UCS or WCS.

Step-by-step (common cases):

  • Fix a skewed sheet: Double-click inside the viewport, type PLAN, enter W, lock the viewport.
  • Work along a building wing: UCS > Object on a known edge, then PLAN > Current for straight-on drafting.
  • Normalize a model view: From any tilted view, run PLAN > W to reset quickly.

System variables that matter:

  • UCSFOLLOW: When set to 1 in model space, changing UCS automatically triggers a plan view. Great for 2D; keep it 0 in paper space and many 3D workflows.
  • UCSVP: Controls whether a UCS is viewport-specific. Use with PLAN to align individual viewports without affecting others.

Best practices:

  • Save the view after aligning: Use VIEW to name and recall aligned plan views across sessions and viewports.
  • Pair with Layer States: After using PLAN, restore a Layer State for instant, consistent presentation.
  • Don’t rotate geometry to “fix” a view: Use UCS + PLAN; it’s safer and reversible.

Troubleshooting:

  • PLAN “does nothing” in paper space: Activate a viewport or switch to model space.
  • View still looks twisted: Check the viewport’s Twist angle (Properties). PLAN resets view direction; Twist may still need zeroing.
  • Unexpected zoom: PLAN keeps extents; if needed, follow with ZOOM > E or a saved view.

Time-saving macros:

  • Plan to World and reset UCS: ^C^C_UCS;W;_PLAN;W;
  • Plan to Current UCS: ^C^C_PLAN;C;
