AutoCAD Tip: Efficient PEDIT Workflow for Clean, Offset-Ready Polylines

PEDIT is the fastest way to fix, combine, smooth, and prepare linework for production. Use it to turn messy segments into reliable, offset-ready, and hatch-safe polylines—without redrawing.

  • Convert instantly:
    • Select a line, arc, or spline and run PEDIT; set PEDITACCEPT=1 to skip the “Convert to polyline?” prompt.
    • Tip: Use Quick Select to grab many lines/arcs, then PEDIT > Multiple to convert and edit at once.
  • Join with control:
    • PEDIT > Join lets you fuse lines, arcs, and polylines into one boundary.
    • Specify a fuzz distance that’s just big enough to bridge tiny gaps—avoid over-joining across intended breaks.
    • Run OVERKILL first to remove duplicates and micro-segments for cleaner joins.
  • Edit vertex like a pro:
    • PEDIT > Edit vertex gives Next/Previous, Insert, Break, and Straighten to repair problem spots precisely.
    • Use Break to eliminate overlaps or “T” intersections that can sabotage hatches and offsets.
  • Open, close, and reverse:
    • Use Close/Open to toggle boundary state for hatches, regions, and area calcs.
    • Reverse flips direction—vital for linetypes with text/arrows and for certain CAM workflows.
  • Width and linetype generation:
    • PEDIT > Width applies uniform thickness for quick diagramming or export needs.
    • PEDIT > Ltype gen toggles pattern flow across the entire polyline; system variable PLINEGEN controls the default.
  • Smooth or straighten on demand:
    • Fit and Spline create smooth, curve-like polylines while staying editable and offsettable.
    • Decurve returns a smoothed polyline to straight segments if you need a crisp boundary again.

Speed setups

  • Alias: Use PE as a fast PEDIT shortcut (default in acad.pgp).
  • System basics: Keep PLINETYPE=1 for lightweight polylines that perform better and export cleanly.
  • Selection: With PEDIT > Multiple, window-select wide, then filter with fences/crossings for complex sites.

Reliable workflows

  • Survey to boundary: Convert and Join field lines/arcs; Close, then OVERKILL to remove extras; hatch with confidence.
  • Centerline prep: Convert, Edit vertex to straighten kinks, Fit if needed, then Offset for parallel geometry.
  • Exploded imports: Convert scattered segments, Join by small fuzz, Reverse if linetype text reads backward.

Quality checks

  • After Join, list the polyline (LIST/Properties) to confirm it’s Closed when you expect a boundary.
  • Test hatch; if it fails, zoom to reported gap, Edit vertex to Insert/Break/Close locally.

Pro tip: Keep PEDIT in your right-click or ribbon for one-click access, and pair it with MATCHPROP to propagate width and linetype-gen settings across related polylines.
