Bluebeam Tip: Automate Symbol Counts with VisualSearch and a Saved Count Tool

Automate symbol counts with VisualSearch to reduce takeoff time and increase consistency across your sheets.

  • Build a smart Count tool:
    • Create a Count markup (Measurements panel) and set Subject, Color, and Appearance so it stands out on plan.
    • Add defaults: Layer (e.g., “Counts – Lighting”), Opacity, and a Label if you want quantities visible.
    • Add it to your Tool Chest for one‑click reuse and team sharing. If you need licenses or shared standards, see NOVEDGE.
  • Run VisualSearch:
    • Open the Search panel and switch to VisualSearch. Drag a rectangle around a clean example of the symbol.
    • Scope your search: Current Page, Current Document, All Open Files, or a Folder of drawings.
    • Tune Options for best results: Matching Sensitivity, Match Rotation, Match Scale, and Color processing.
  • Review and refine:
    • Inspect the results list and previews; uncheck false positives before applying.
    • If you see misses, slightly enlarge the sample region or lower sensitivity and search again.
  • Apply the Count automatically:
    • Select all valid results, then apply your saved Count tool to the checked hits.
    • Each match receives a uniform Count markup with your properties, helping QA and downstream reporting.
  • Report and track:
    • Use the Markups List to sort/group by Subject or Custom Columns (e.g., Spec, Phase, Location).
    • Save filters for “By Discipline” views and export CSV or create a Summary for stakeholders.
    • Apply Statuses (Planned, Verified, Installed) to turn counts into a lightweight progress tracker.

Pro tips

  • Pre‑clean scans with Enhance/Despeckle to reduce false positives.
  • For rotated or mirrored symbols, enable Rotation matching; for mixed scales across details, run per‑scale searches.
  • After slip‑sheeting, filter by Revision or use Sets to avoid double counting.
  • Share your Count tool via a company Tool Set; standardization pays off. Need help scaling Bluebeam across teams? Visit NOVEDGE.
