AutoCAD Tip: Creating Precise Ellipses and Isocircles in AutoCAD

Ellipses are valuable when a design calls for geometry that is neither circular nor freeform. From architectural openings and mechanical slots to isometric details, the ELLIPSE command creates controlled, editable elliptical geometry without approximating the shape with splines or arcs.

In AutoCAD, an ellipse is defined by two axes:

  • Major axis: the longest diameter of the ellipse.
  • Minor axis: the shorter diameter, measured perpendicular to the major axis.

The most reliable workflow is to create the major axis first, then specify the minor-axis distance precisely.

  1. Enter ELLIPSE at the Command line.
  2. Select the first endpoint of the major axis.
  3. Select the second endpoint of the major axis.
  4. Enter the distance for the other half-axis, or pick a point to define it visually.

Notice that AutoCAD asks for the distance to the other axis, which is the semi-minor axis rather than the full minor-axis diameter. For example, if the ellipse must be 100 units wide by 60 units high, draw a 100-unit major axis and enter 30 for the other axis distance.

For accurate work, avoid estimating ellipse proportions with the cursor. Use coordinate entry, Object Snaps, Polar Tracking, and Dynamic Input to establish exact endpoints. A practical approach is to draw temporary construction lines representing the required overall width and height, then snap to their endpoints or midpoint relationships. Place those construction objects on a non-plotting guide layer so they can be retained for revisions without appearing in final output.

The Center option is especially useful when the ellipse must remain centered on a known feature. Instead of selecting an axis endpoint first:

  • Start ELLIPSE.
  • Type C for Center.
  • Specify the center point.
  • Define one half-axis.
  • Define the other half-axis.

This method is ideal for centered openings, oval equipment footprints, and symmetric decorative elements. If the center must align with existing geometry, use the Center object snap rather than manually locating the point.

AutoCAD also allows you to create an elliptical arc. After beginning the ELLIPSE command and defining both axes, choose the Arc option. You can then identify start and end angles to produce only the required segment. This is cleaner than trimming a full ellipse, particularly when the arc must remain intentionally defined for downstream edits.

A key drafting consideration is the difference between a true ellipse and an isometric circle. When drafting in isometric mode, use ELLIPSE with the Isocircle option. Set the correct isoplane first with ISOPLANE or by pressing F5, then create the isocircle on the appropriate Left, Top, or Right plane. An isocircle looks elliptical on screen but represents a circular feature viewed in an isometric orientation.

  • Use a true ellipse for an actual oval shape.
  • Use an isocircle for a circular hole, cylinder, or rounded feature in an isometric drawing.

After creation, select an ellipse to review its grips and Properties palette values. You can adjust its center, major-axis endpoint, and minor-axis ratio without redrawing the object. Keep ellipses on the correct layer and assign properties ByLayer to preserve office standards and plotting consistency.
