Revit Tip: Best Practices for Managing Model Lines in Revit

Model Lines are powerful because they exist in the 3D model and can appear in multiple views. They are also easy to misuse. A disciplined approach keeps your Revit model clear, coordinated, and less likely to create confusion during documentation, visualization, or model handoff.

Unlike Detail Lines, which are view-specific annotation, Model Lines are actual model elements. They can be visible in plan, elevation, section, and 3D views, depending on their position and visibility settings. Use them only when a line truly needs to communicate three-dimensional information.

  • Use Model Lines for intentional 3D references. They are appropriate for items such as conceptual edges, nonphysical geometry guides, cable paths in early design, custom diagrammatic elements, or model-based drafting that must be visible from several directions.
  • Use Detail Lines for drafting. If the line represents a symbolic break line, a diagram note, a 2D clarification, or a detail-specific graphic, create a Detail Line instead. This prevents unnecessary model content and keeps the information limited to the relevant view.
  • Avoid tracing modeled geometry. Do not draw Model Lines over wall edges, floor boundaries, roof outlines, or family edges merely to make them look darker. Use Visibility/Graphics, Object Styles, linework overrides, materials, or view templates to control presentation instead.

Before placing a Model Line, consider whether a real Revit element should represent the object. For example, a handrail, curb, structural member, conduit, or fascia should normally be modeled with the appropriate category and family—not represented by lines. Proper elements carry parameters, can be scheduled, coordinate more reliably, and behave correctly in sections and exports.

When Model Lines are necessary, set them up consistently:

  • Select the correct line style. Create and use approved office line styles for intended graphic conventions. Avoid relying on generic or improvised styles that other team members will not recognize.
  • Assign the correct workset. In workshared projects, place lines on a logical workset so they can be managed, hidden, or transferred without affecting unrelated content.
  • Control their plane carefully. Model Lines are drawn on a work plane. Verify the active plane before sketching, especially in 3D or elevation views, to avoid lines floating above or below the intended location.
  • Name reference planes clearly. If Model Lines depend on reference planes, use meaningful names and avoid leaving temporary planes in the project.
  • Keep geometry simple. Excessive segments, imported-looking linework, and dense patterns can reduce model readability and affect performance in large files.

Visibility management is essential. Model Lines are controlled through the Lines category in Visibility/Graphics and through Object Styles. Incorporate these settings into view templates so that coordination views, working views, presentation views, and sheets display Model Lines appropriately. A coordination 3D view may need them visible, while construction-document views may not.

Also review Model Lines before issuing a model. In a 3D view, use selection filters or temporary hide/isolate to locate accidental lines. Check for stray geometry, duplicate linework, incorrect line styles, and lines placed at unexpected elevations. These issues commonly arise when users sketch on the wrong work plane or copy content between views.

A useful rule is simple: if a line must communicate real spatial intent across views, a Model Line may be justified. If it only improves one drawing, use a Detail Line. This distinction keeps the BIM model purposeful rather than turning it into a collection of 2D drafting shortcuts.
