AutoCAD Tip: Create Precise Rectangles with AutoCAD RECTANG Dimensions and Coordinates

Accurate rectangles are foundational to efficient 2D drafting in AutoCAD. Whether you are defining room footprints, equipment pads, panel outlines, or detail boundaries, the RECTANG command provides a fast and precise way to create closed polyline geometry.

To begin, type RECTANG at the Command line, press Enter, and specify the first corner. AutoCAD then prompts for the opposite corner. Rather than clicking approximately, use direct coordinate entry or the Dimensions option to control the exact width and height.

For example, to create a rectangle that is 120 units wide by 80 units high:

  • Start the RECTANG command.
  • Pick or enter the first corner point.
  • Type D for Dimensions.
  • Enter 120 for the length.
  • Enter 80 for the width.
  • Click in the appropriate direction to place the rectangle.

AutoCAD interprets the first dimension as the horizontal length and the second as the vertical width based on the current orientation of the cursor. Use Polar Tracking, Ortho mode, or coordinate input to ensure the rectangle is positioned exactly where it belongs.

Another highly effective method is relative coordinate entry. After identifying the first corner, enter the opposite corner using a relative coordinate such as:

@120,80

The @ symbol tells AutoCAD to measure the new point from the previously specified point. This technique is ideal when you already know the rectangle’s exact dimensions and want to work quickly from the keyboard. For a rectangle extending down and to the left, you could use negative values, such as @-120,-80.

The RECTANG command also includes useful options for producing more sophisticated geometry:

  • Chamfer: Creates beveled corners using specified chamfer distances.
  • Fillet: Applies rounded corners with a defined radius.
  • Elevation: Sets the rectangle’s elevation for 3D-aware workflows.
  • Thickness: Assigns an extrusion-like thickness to the object.
  • Width: Creates the rectangle as a polyline with a specified segment width.

For standard drafting, keep the chamfer and fillet values at zero unless the design specifically requires modified corners. This avoids introducing unintended geometry that can complicate hatching, offsetting, trimming, or downstream fabrication workflows.

A key detail is that a rectangle created with RECTANG is normally a single closed polyline, not four separate lines. This is beneficial because the object can be selected, moved, copied, offset, and hatched as one entity. Verify this in the Properties palette: the object type should display as Polyline. Closed polylines are particularly reliable when creating associative hatches and calculating areas.

For dimensions that must remain easy to verify, add horizontal and vertical dimensions immediately after creating the rectangle. Use object snaps such as Endpoint and Intersection to ensure dimension extension lines attach to the correct corners.
