Revit Tip: Strategic Curtain Wall Mullion Placement in Revit

Curtain wall mullions do more than divide glazing panels: they establish the façade’s rhythm, support system, constructability, and visual hierarchy. Placing them intentionally in Revit helps create curtain wall systems that are easier to coordinate, document, and revise.

Start by selecting the curtain wall and confirming that its grid layout supports the intended mullion pattern. Mullions are hosted by curtain grids, so a clear grid strategy should come before adding or modifying mullions. Use the Architecture tab, choose Mullion, then select a mullion type from the Type Selector.

  • Use “All Grid Lines” for quick system setup. This option applies the selected mullion type across every available curtain grid line. It is useful for regular storefronts, curtain walls with consistent framing, and early design studies.
  • Use “One Segment” for local control. Select individual grid segments when mullions must stop at doors, align with structural elements, respond to panel changes, or create a custom façade composition.
  • Use “All Grid Lines” selectively. You can apply a mullion type to all vertical or horizontal grid lines as needed, then override selected segments where the design requires a different condition.

A strong workflow is to establish the primary framing first. For example, place deeper perimeter mullions around the curtain wall boundary, then apply standard vertical and horizontal interior mullions. This creates an immediate visual distinction between the main frame and secondary framing.

Pay close attention to mullion profiles and placement. Revit mullion families can be rectangular, circular, corner-based, trapezoidal, or custom profiles. The selected type affects the façade’s appearance in elevation, section, 3D views, and rendered output. It also influences the clarity of construction documents.

  • Interior mullions typically define the regular grid between panels.
  • Border mullions frame the outer edges of a curtain wall.
  • Corner mullions resolve intersections between curtain walls and should be reviewed carefully in plan and 3D views.
  • Custom profile mullions help represent manufacturer-specific framing systems or design-driven façade geometry.

When adjusting mullions, avoid treating them as purely graphical objects. They are model elements with type properties, material assignments, dimensions, and profile definitions. A change to a mullion type can affect every instance of that type in the project. Before editing a type, duplicate it and use clear names such as CW_Mullion_50x100_Aluminum or CW_Perimeter_75x150. This protects existing façade conditions and makes schedules easier to understand.

Use temporary hide/isolate, section views, and realistic or shaded visual styles to inspect mullion placement. This is especially important at:

  • Curtain wall corners and returns
  • Door and operable window panel locations
  • Sloped curtain walls and roof glazing
  • Transitions between curtain walls and conventional wall construction
  • Connections to floors, parapets, and structural framing

For better documentation, create dedicated elevation and section views with a view template that clearly displays curtain grids, mullions, panels, and relevant detail levels. Consistent graphics help reviewers distinguish between structural framing, glazing supports, and architectural trims.

Finally, coordinate early with the intended glazing or curtain wall system. Revit’s mullion tools are excellent for design and documentation, but real-world systems have limits on mullion depths, spans, drainage, thermal breaks, and panel sizes. Modeling those constraints early reduces late-stage redesign.
