AutoCAD Tip: Automate Title Blocks with Sheet Set Fields

Automate your title blocks by driving them with Sheet Set fields—fast to set up, rock-solid for updates, and ideal for multi-sheet projects.

Why it matters

  • One source of truth: update project data once; every sheet reflects the change.
  • Fewer errors: eliminates manual edits and mismatched titles or numbers.
  • Scalable: perfect for large sets and standards-driven workflows.

Set up the Sheet Set foundation

  • Open Sheet Set Manager (SSM): command SHEETSET.
  • Create a new Sheet Set or import layouts from an existing DWG/DWT.
  • Right-click the sheet set name > Properties:
    • Fill built-in fields (Project Name, Number, etc.).
    • Add custom properties for repeatable metadata (Client, Discipline, Phase, Issue Date).

Prepare a field-ready title block

  • Open your title block DWG/DWT. Convert static text to attributes (ATTDEF) where appropriate.
  • Edit each attribute > Insert Field:
    • Category: SheetSet for set-wide values (e.g., Project Name, Project Number).
    • Field names commonly used:
      • CurrentSheetNumber for the sheet identifier.
      • CurrentSheetTitle for the sheet title.
      • CurrentSheetSet for the set name.
      • SheetSetCustom.[PropertyName] for your custom project properties.
      • CurrentSheetCustom.[PropertyName] for sheet-specific custom data (e.g., Discipline).
  • Save the title block back to your template so every new sheet starts correctly configured.

Roll it out across your set

  • Insert or update the title block in each layout.
  • Use ATTSYNC (or BATTMAN) to push attribute definition changes into placed blocks.
  • Adjust field update behavior:
    • FIELDDISPLAY = 1 to visualize fields with gray background (non-plotting).
    • FIELDEVAL controls when fields refresh (e.g., on save, plot, regen). Use UPDATEFIELD to force-refresh.

Practical patterns you’ll reuse

  • Global project info: make them Sheet Set Custom properties (Client, Project, Phase, CAD Standard Version).
  • Per-sheet data: use CurrentSheetCustom properties (Discipline, Drawn By, Checked By).
  • Revisions: keep “Current Issue Date/Description” as Sheet Set Custom for batch issuances; archive prior issues in a revision table as needed.
  • Callouts and view labels: reference sheet numbers/titles via fields to maintain cross-sheet consistency.

Troubleshooting

  • Fields show “####”: missing or renamed property—verify in SSM Properties.
  • No updates on plot: set FIELDEVAL to update on plot, or run UPDATEFIELD before publishing.
  • Attributes not changing: run ATTSYNC after editing the block definition.

Implementation tip

  • Bake your field-enabled title block and custom properties into your DWT. New projects start fully automated.
