AutoCAD Tip: Create Precise Regular Shapes with the AutoCAD POLYGON Command

Use the POLYGON command when you need a perfectly regular shape with equal sides and equal angles. It is faster and more reliable than drawing individual lines, especially for common forms such as hexagonal bolts, octagonal symbols, or evenly spaced geometric layouts.

Start the command by typing POLYGON or selecting it from the Draw panel. AutoCAD then guides you through a few important choices:

  • Number of sides: Enter any value from 3 to 1,024. For example, enter 6 for a hexagon or 8 for an octagon.
  • Center point: Pick or enter the center location for the polygon.
  • Construction method: Choose whether the polygon is inscribed in or circumscribed about an imaginary circle.
  • Radius: Enter a precise radius or pick a point graphically.

The most important decision is the construction method:

  • Inscribed in circle: Every vertex of the polygon touches the circle. The radius you enter is the distance from the center to each corner. This method is useful when the overall corner-to-corner size must be controlled.
  • Circumscribed about circle: Every side is tangent to the circle. The radius represents the distance from the center to each side. This option is especially helpful for mechanical details, such as creating a hexagon around a known bolt or nut diameter.

For example, to create a hexagonal nut profile around a 20 mm circular feature, use POLYGON, specify 6 sides, select the center of the circle, choose Circumscribed about circle, and enter a radius of 10. The resulting hexagon will have its flat sides tangent to the 20 mm diameter circle.

Remember that a polygon is created as a single, closed polyline, not as separate line objects. That makes it ideal for downstream operations such as:

  • Applying OFFSET to create parallel outlines.
  • Using HATCH to fill the shape.
  • Creating a REGION for area calculations or 3D operations.
  • Using EXTRUDE or PRESSPULL to turn the profile into a 3D solid.
  • Editing the entire outline quickly with the Properties palette or grips.

For better placement accuracy, activate Object Snap before selecting the center point. Center, Endpoint, Midpoint, and Intersection snaps are particularly useful when the polygon must align with existing geometry. You can also use direct coordinate entry, such as 0,0, to place the polygon at an exact location.

If the polygon needs a specific orientation, use the final radius point carefully: the direction from the center to that point determines the orientation of the first vertex or side relationship. For consistent drafting standards, create one correctly oriented polygon and turn it into a block for repeated use.

Regular polygons are simple tools, but they can significantly improve accuracy and speed in architectural, mechanical, electrical, and fabrication drawings.
