AutoCAD Tip: AutoCAD MATCHPROP: Quickly Standardize Object Properties

When a drawing contains objects that should look and behave alike, AutoCAD’s MATCHPROP command is one of the fastest ways to enforce consistency. Instead of manually changing layers, colors, linetypes, text styles, or dimension settings, copy the properties from one correctly formatted source object to one or more destination objects.

Start the command by typing MATCHPROP, or type its common shortcut, MA, then press Enter. Select the object with the desired properties first. AutoCAD then prompts you to select the objects that need to be updated.

• Source object: The correctly formatted object whose properties you want to copy.
• Destination objects: The objects that need to receive those properties.
• Finish: Press Enter after selecting the destination objects.

For example, imagine a floor plan in which several walls were accidentally drawn on the wrong layer or assigned inconsistent lineweights. Select one wall that follows your office standard, run MA, choose the incorrect walls, and AutoCAD can immediately apply the source wall’s layer, color, linetype, lineweight, transparency, and other compatible properties.

This tool is especially valuable when working with drawings received from consultants, older templates, or multiple contributors. It helps make a file visually consistent without rebuilding geometry or repeatedly opening the Properties palette.

By default, Match Properties can copy a broad collection of settings, including:

• Layer, color, linetype, lineweight, and transparency
• Plot style and material assignments
• Text style, text height, and justification where applicable
• Dimension style and relevant dimension settings
• Hatch pattern, scale, angle, and appearance
• Block-related properties and certain object-specific settings

However, copying every available property is not always appropriate. Before selecting destination objects, use the Settings option at the command prompt. This opens the Property Settings dialog box, where you can control which categories are copied. For instance, you may want to match only an object’s layer and color while preserving its linetype or hatch scale.

A useful workflow is to establish a “known-good” example of every common object type in the drawing: a wall, centerline, dimension, note, hatch, viewport, and leader. These examples become quick formatting references. When a new object looks wrong, use Match Properties instead of guessing which settings should be corrected.

Keep these practical precautions in mind:

• Match like objects whenever possible. A source dimension is best used on other dimensions, and a text source is best used on text.
• Check annotative objects carefully. Annotation scale behavior may require separate review.
• Use Undo immediately if the selected source object transfers more properties than intended.
• For repeated cleanup, configure the Settings options once, then apply MATCHPROP across the drawing.
