AutoCAD Tip: AutoCAD Grips for Fast In-Place Editing

Grips let you edit geometry in-place—no commands, fewer clicks, more speed. Mastering them is one of the fastest productivity wins in AutoCAD.

Core workflow

  • Select an object to display grips (blue). Click a grip to make it hot (red).
  • With a hot grip, press Spacebar to cycle: Stretch → Move → Rotate → Scale → Mirror.
  • Use direct distance entry: move the cursor to set direction, type a value, press Enter.
  • Use OSNAP, Ortho, Polar Tracking, and Object Snap Tracking during any grip edit for precision.

Multi-functional grips by object type

  • Polyline grips
    • Vertex grips: Stretch, Add Vertex, Remove Vertex, Convert to Arc/Line.
    • Mid-segment grips: Lengthen, Convert to Arc/Line, Offset segment in place.
    • Tip: Hold Ctrl to cycle sub-options on certain grips (varies by release).
  • Hatch grips
    • Adjust origin, angle, and scale from dedicated grips.
    • Reposition the pattern without recreating the hatch.
  • Dimensions and leaders
    • Drag text, extension line endpoints, and arrowheads to clean up annotation quickly.
    • Use the center grip on radial/diameter dims to relocate the text neatly.
  • Blocks (including Dynamic Blocks)
    • Standard blocks: move from insertion point grip; rotate/scale by cycling with Spacebar.
    • Dynamic Blocks: custom parameter grips (visibility, stretch, rotation, flip) enable powerful edits. Create and tune these in Block Editor.
  • 3D subobjects
    • Ctrl+click to subselect faces/edges/vertices, then use grips (and gizmos) for precise edits.

Precision boosters

  • Base point: when a grip is hot, type B to set a custom base point for Move/Rotate/Scale.
  • Reference: type R during Rotate/Scale to use a reference length or angle.
  • Copy: type C during a grip edit to copy while editing—great for repeated adjustments.
  • Undo: type U if a step goes wrong mid-grip (no need to exit).

Power-user settings

  • GRIPS = 1 turns grips on; set to 0 if you need a distraction-free selection pass.
  • GRIPOBJLIMIT limits the number of grips shown on large selections (boosts performance).
  • GRIPMULTIFUNCTIONAL controls enhanced polyline grip menus; enable for the richest options.
  • Options > Selection tab: adjust grip size and colors for better visibility on dense drawings.

Workflow patterns to adopt today

  • Multi-grip stretch: select a polyline, Shift+click several vertices to make them hot, then Stretch all at once with OSNAPs on.
  • Rapid cleanups: use dimension text and leader arrow grips to fix crowding in seconds.
  • Block adjustments: expose key parameters as Dynamic Block grips to eliminate repetitive commands.
  • Hatch nudging: align hatch origin and angle with object snaps instead of rebuilding patterns.

Pro tip: Combine grips with Polar Tracking angles and Object Snap Tracking for surgical edits—no dialog boxes, just precise in-place control.
