Key Features and Benefits

LightWave 3D 2019 set the standard for polygonal, subdivision surface modeling a decade before many of the other 3D software packages included even basic polygonal modeling tools. LightWave 3D 2019 artists can quickly and efficiently model with smooth subdivision surfaces interactively
LightWave 3D 2019 offers two surfacing systems to the artist. A fast, simple to use layer-based system, and a very flexible and powerful nodal system. Each offer different workflows to suit the artist. These systems can be used independently of each other, or mixed together
You can either choose to setup industry standard weight maps or you can elect to bypass that time-consuming weight mapping process for quick visualization and concept design animation workflows. Quickly and easily swap out geometry in rigs with zero weight map hassles, while keeping the choice to work with weight maps for that added control when your project requires it
LightWave 3D 2019 includes powerful procedural, nodal, and keyframe animation tools. A customizable keyframe graph editor allows you to quickly place and edit keys, time scale, filter, and even manipulate your animations with expressions.
For facial animation LightWave 3D 2019 includes an efficient blend-shape system called Endomorphs which includes all of your morph targets within your base object. Endomorphs can even be sculpted in ZBrush using the new ZBrush GoZ interchange tools included in LightWave 3D 2019
Virtual Studio Tools
Device support ranges from economical mice, tablets and game system controllers to the sensor arrays and other custom cameras and devices. Applications range from propelling your camera on an architectural flythrough using a 6DoF mouse to puppeteering your characters live on stage using Playstation Move controllers, to recording every camera move shot for shot for a major motion picture, a technique pioneered on the film Avatar
Instancing allows vast duplication of objects in a scene with very little overhead. With instancing huge 'virtual' polygon counts can be achieved allowing the artist to populate their scenes with incredible detail, yet retaining reasonable render times and memory usage.
Instances can be randomly scaled, positioned, rotated and even surfaced entirely differently from the source, allowing for a huge variety of uses
  • Bullet Dynamics
  • Hypervolex
  • Particlefx
  • Fiberfx
  • Flocking
    • Network Software Renderer
    • VPR (Viewport Preview Renderer)
    • Linear Colorspace Workflow
    • Stereoscopic Rendering
The inclusion of Python in LightWave 3D 2019 allows even further integration into studio pipelines, as those familiar with Python can quickly begin writing tools for LightWave 3D 2019
LightWave 3D 2019 has extremely robust interchange tools tested and production-proven by top Hollywood studios. This allows easy dataflow back and forth between LightWave 3D 2019 and the other major 3D animation and effects software packages, which gives you a powerful tool to solve a large number of production problems and help streamline your project
ASCII Text-Based Scene Files and Object Referencing
The very efficient and robust ASCII based scene file format, combined with the way that LightWave 3D 2019 references separate object files, prevents the risk of a large all-inclusive binary scene file corrupting your assets. Additionally, LightWave 3D 2019's text-based scene file format allows for amazing flexibility and customization within complex pipelines when coupled with the powerful Python scripting language

      LightWave 2019 is a standout

LightWave has really come into its own with 2019. Although not a huge upgrade from 2018, it really rounds some of things that have been missing from LW while still remaining easy to use. New to 2019 is a animated sculpting tool called Metamorphic which has a lot uses for anyone doing medical animations. Also new is OpenVDB ceation tools for creating cool goo etc.. An Unreal Engine bridge has been added that works really well. I have imported several of my archvis projects into Unreal from LightWave with great success. Plus there has been a bunch of other stuff added, but for me the two best additions have been the Despike setting in the render properties and the Nvidia Optix Denoiser. The Despike eliminates fireflies that are common with PBR renderers and the Denoiser cleans up your renders allowing you to back off on samples which in turn decrease your render times by 50 to 75 percent. I love the Denoiser. Also there is a new Patina shader and a bunch more material options. It's a great update. LightWave has retained its ease of use while adding some great benefits to its user base. I highly recommend LightWave to new users because of its ease of use.

LightWave 11.6 has raised LightWave to a new level

I have always loved the power and ease of use Lightwave has.
I love to model and animate my creations.
3D printing got popular and I wanted to print real models of my creations. I also build real robots and wanted to make my own parts in LightWave.
LightWave 11.6 came out and made 3d printing so much easier than ever before.
11.6 adds import and export of STL files and also lets me know why an object wont print.
They took this amazing software and made it more powerful and easier to use.
Rigging any creature you build is so much easier. You want i/k, now it is easy.
The morphs you make to give your creations life will also print out in 3d for very cool statues or working robots.
You can download free models from Thingiverse and customize them and print out what you have made.
I have tried many 3d programs and I am so glad I found LightWave.
I get more done than ever before.

      Best Choice For Budget Conscious

I am a long time Lightwave user. That said I thought about switching to Maya this time. Maya is all around a better program. The only reason not to switch is the cost. After much thought, I simply couldn't justify the expense of a few thousand dollars every couple of years when Lightwave still meets my needs. So for me it was all about price point, but that is why Lightwave is still around and will be for the foreseeable future. It is the only reasonably well supported (by vendors) $1000 software package.

      11.5 is a great update

Lightwave 11.5 new features and fast rendering has paid for itself in one job. same day download was great.
