ZBrush Tip: ZSketch Ribbon-Based Blocking on ZSphere Armatures

ZSketch lets you sketch volumes directly on a ZSphere armature to block forms at speed, keeping you focused on proportion and silhouette before committing to topology.

  • Start with a clean ZSphere armature that matches your target proportions. Keep the joint count lean; fewer ZSpheres make iteration and posing faster.
  • Enter ZSketch mode and choose a Sketch brush (Sketch 1 for broad masses, Sketch 2 for tighter strands). Adjust brush size frequently as you move from torso blocks to limbs and secondary forms.
  • Work in symmetry for primary passes, then disable it for asymmetrical accents. Symmetry early; character later.
  • Lay down strokes as intersecting strips that follow anatomical flow (lat to oblique to pelvis, deltoid wraps, quadriceps fan). Think “ribbons of mass,” not blobs.
  • Vary thickness with pressure and brush size: thick for bellies of muscles, taper at insertions. This naturally establishes convincing transitions.
  • Use smoothing sparingly to unify overlaps without melting your silhouette. If an area gets lumpy, remove with negative strokes and rebuild in cleaner ribbons.
  • Bind the ZSketch to the armature to test posing early. Subtle armature adjustments should maintain volume if your strokes follow correct flow.
  • Keep visual checks simple: flat material, strong key light, and frequent silhouette spins at mid-zoom to avoid local-detail traps.

Control essentials for clean results:

  • Stroke direction matters. Always sketch along the intended tension lines (e.g., across the rib cage arc, not randomly around it).
  • Use fewer, longer strokes for big masses; reserve short, layered strokes for bony landmarks and transitions.
  • Alternate add/remove passes to “carve” forms. It’s faster to subtract and re-lay a ribbon than to over-smooth.
  • Group your armature logically (torso, limbs, hands) so test-poses don’t collapse layered strokes.
  • Regularly Optimize/Clean in ZSketch to fuse micro-overlaps and reduce skin artifacts later.
  • Save incremental versions before major binding or clean-up operations to keep your exploration fearless.

From sketch to sculpt:

  • Preview the skinned result often and tune resolution and smoothing to retain your intended edges while removing chatter.
  • Generate a Unified Skin from the ZSketch when the silhouette feels right. Avoid cranking resolution too high; plan to refine post-conversion.
  • Immediately ZRemesh the skin for better edge flow, enabling confident Move and planar brushes without stepping.
  • Subdivide, then Project All from the Unified Skin if needed to recapture bulk without reintroducing artifacts.
  • Refine with TrimDynamic, HPolish, and Move for planes and proportion; finish with DamStandard and Clay Buildup to reassert creases and form transitions.
  • For clothing or armor, extract from masked regions on the clean remesh rather than from the raw ZSketch skin for crisper boundaries.

Production tips:

  • Limit the ZSketch stage to silhouette, planes, and large secondaries. Details belong after retopo and subdivision.
  • Pose-test early and often; if volumes break, adjust ribbon flow instead of forcing higher resolution.
