ZBrush Tip: ZBrush Top-10 Hotkey Setup for Accelerated Workflow

Speed in ZBrush comes from muscle memory—lock in hotkeys for your top 10 actions and watch your workflow accelerate.

Why a “Top 10” set works: It concentrates practice on the commands you use dozens of times per session, reducing cursor travel, panel hunting, and modal switching. Keep this set stable across projects to build reliable habits.

Assign and persist your hotkeys (quick setup):

  • Open Preferences > Config and enable “Enable Customize.”
  • Ctrl+Alt+click any UI control (button/slider/menu item), then press your desired key or key combo to assign a hotkey.
  • Store your hotkeys: Preferences > Hotkeys > Store (for startup) and Save (to a file you can back up/share).
  • Store your UI so it all loads next time: Preferences > Config > Store Config.
  • To learn existing assignments, hover items with Tool Tips on; the tooltip displays any mapped hotkey.

A proven shortlist to map and memorize:

  • Toggle Symmetry
  • Frame/Focus the model or subtool
  • Solo mode
  • Dynamesh (toggle or re-Dynamesh)
  • ZRemesher
  • SubTool Up/Down
  • Mask Invert and Mask Clear
  • QuickSave
  • Gizmo 3D (Move/Scale/Rotate)
  • Repeat Last

Mapping strategy tips:

  • Use easy single keys for the most frequent actions; move less frequent to Ctrl/Alt/Shift combos.
  • Keep groupings logical (e.g., adjacent keys for SubTool Up/Down).
  • Avoid overriding widely used defaults unless you’re certain—you’ll fight years of muscle memory.
  • Create a “cheat shelf”: with Enable Customize on, Ctrl+Alt+drag your 10 icons to a custom top shelf, then Store Config.
  • Back up your CustomHotkeys file and UI config; share them with your team for consistency.

Daily 10-minute drill to lock them in:

  • Pick two hotkeys per day and consciously trigger them 50+ times while sculpting.
  • Hide panels you’re tempted to click; force yourself to use the keys.
  • End the session with a quick test: can you fire all 10 without looking?

Troubleshooting and housekeeping:

  • If a hotkey doesn’t stick, make sure you used Store in Preferences > Hotkeys and have write permissions to ZStartup.
  • Conflicts happen—reassign the duplicate or move one to a modifier combo.
  • After updates, re-load your saved hotkey file and re-Store Config.
