ZBrush Tip: ZBrush Hole Closure Best Practices

Closing small gaps cleanly prevents shading artifacts, failed Booleans, and export issues. Here’s a reliable, production-friendly way to seal openings without compromising surface quality.

Where to access it

  • Tool > Geometry > Modify Topology > Close Holes: One-click cap creation on all open boundaries of the visible mesh.
  • ZModeler Action: Close > Hole for interactive, single-hole control with shape options (ideal when you care about cap flow and curvature).

Fast, safe workflow

  • Duplicate the SubTool first (SubTool > Duplicate) for a non-destructive checkpoint.
  • Isolate the target area (Ctrl+Shift to hide what you don’t need) so Close Holes only evaluates the intended gaps.
  • Run Close Holes. If multiple holes exist, the command caps them all at once.
  • Optionally, ZRemesher afterward to normalize the topology of the new caps, then Project All to recover detail from the duplicate, high-resolution source.

When you need precision

  • Use ZModeler Close > Hole to guide how the cap is formed (great for circular vents, stylized armor ports, or gasket seats).
  • For two openings that should be connected, ZModeler > Bridge > Two Holes gives cleaner edge flow than closing and merging later.
  • Protect surrounding forms: enable Brush > Auto Masking > Auto Mask by PolyGroups to avoid dragging nearby surfaces while refining the new cap.
  • To keep edges crisp, set Geometry > Crease > Crease PG before subdividing, then uncrease selectively as needed.

Working alongside Dynamesh

  • Close Holes is excellent just before a Dynamesh update to prevent Dynamesh from stretching thin borders into unwanted webs.
  • After capping, Dynamesh remeshes the area uniformly; use Deformation > Polish by Features sparingly to maintain silhouette.

Troubleshooting

  • Strange caps or missing fills: run Tool > Geometry > Mesh Integrity > Check Mesh Integrity (then Fix Mesh) to resolve non-manifold edges before trying again.
  • Backface grabs while sculpting around the cap: enable Brush > Auto Masking > Backface Mask.
  • Paper-thin overlaps that won’t cap cleanly: slightly inflate the region (Deformation > Inflate a small amount) to separate surfaces, then Close Holes.
  • Cap topology looks lumpy: ZRemesher with KeepGroups ON, then Project All to restore original form. Light smoothing with the Smooth brush or Deformation > Relax can finish the blend.

Pro tips

  • Use Tool > Display Properties > Double to verify interior faces and ensure the cap is oriented correctly.
  • If you only want one hole capped, hide everything else or mask off the surrounding area to localize the operation.
  • For real-time assets, prefer ZModeler caps and a subsequent ZRemesher pass to maintain even quads for baking normal and AO maps.
