Bluebeam Tip: Auto-Generate Markup Legends

Generate Markup Legends automatically to keep your sheets self-explanatory, consistent, and issue-ready—without manual keys.

  • Prepare your markups
    • Set clear Subjects and colors for each tool in your Tool Chest.
    • Keep related items on layers for easy filtering.
    • For counts and measurements, confirm scale and precision first.
  • Create the legend
    • Option A: Select specific markups you want included.
    • Option B: Leave nothing selected to build a legend from the current page.
    • Go to Markup > Legend > Create Markup Legend, then click to place it on the sheet (or right‑click on the page and choose Markup Legend > Create).
  • Configure quickly in Properties
    • Choose the source (Selected markups, Current page, or Entire document).
    • Show the columns that matter: symbol, Subject, Count, Measurement values, and more.
    • Edit title, text size, border/fill, and spacing to fit your title block or notes area.
  • Update as designs change
    • Right‑click the legend and choose Update Legend to refresh counts and entries after edits.
    • Duplicate legends per discipline or phase by copy/paste; each can reference different sources.

Workflow tips

  • Filter first, then legend: Use the Markups List to filter by Status, Layer, Author, or Subject. Select the filtered results, then create a legend from the selection for discipline‑specific sheets.
  • Standardize appearance: After formatting a legend, right‑click > Add to Tool Chest to reuse the same look across projects.
  • Issue control: Before transmitting, Flatten the legend and related markups to lock content and ensure what reviewers see is what prints.
  • Space‑savvy: Reduce text size and hide nonessential columns to keep legends compact on half‑size sets.
  • QA/QC: Pair Compare Documents or Overlay Pages with a fresh legend to clearly enumerate deltas in revisions.
