ZBrush Tip: ZBrush Export: Enable Flip V for Correct Texture Orientation

Exporting textures from ZBrush? Make sure their vertical orientation matches your destination DCC by using Texture Map > Flip V. It’s a small switch that prevents upside-down maps, broken UDIM alignment, and head‑scratching render issues. If you manage multiple tools or a UDIM workflow, standardize Flip V in your export routine—then forget about it.

When and why Flip V matters

  • Different apps assume different UV image origins. ZBrush’s export often needs a vertical flip for external DCCs that read UVs bottom-left.
  • Symptoms of a missing Flip V:
    • Textures appear upside down on import.
    • UDIM tiles misalign (tile numbers don’t match expected regions).
    • Projection painting or decals land in the wrong places.
  • Keep Flip V separate in your mind from normal map “green channel” (OpenGL vs DirectX). One is texture orientation, the other is tangent-space channel direction.

Fast, reliable workflows

  • Per SubTool export:
    • Tool > Texture Map: Create your map (e.g., New From Polypaint), then press Flip V.
    • Press Clone Txtr to send it to the Texture palette, then Export.
  • Global single-texture method:
    • Texture palette > select the texture > Flip V > Export.
  • Multi Map Exporter (UDIM-friendly):
    • ZPlugin > Multi Map Exporter (MME): enable Flip V for all generated maps (color, normal, displacement, AO, etc.).
    • Set SubDiv level, 8/16-bit depth, and UDIM naming as needed, then Export All.

Destination app pointers

  • Maya/3ds Max/Blender + Arnold/V-Ray/Redshift: Typically expect bottom-left UV origin. Flip V when exporting from ZBrush.
  • Substance 3D Painter/Designer: If maps originate in ZBrush, Flip V for consistent orientation with baking and painting workflows.
  • Game engines (Unreal/Unity): Often expect bottom-left; some importers compensate. Test with a numbered UV grid to verify.

Preflight checklist

  • Generate the map at the correct resolution and bit depth (e.g., 4K, 16‑bit for displacement).
  • Flip V before export (per map or via MME).
  • Name maps with UDIM tokens if applicable (1001, 1002…), and keep consistent color spaces (sRGB for color, linear for scalar maps).
  • In the target DCC, disable any automatic flips if you’ve already flipped in ZBrush.

Troubleshooting

  • Still misaligned? Confirm UVs weren’t altered after baking and that UDIM indexing matches.
  • Normals look wrong but textures align? Check normal map Y (green) channel, not Flip V.
  • Displacement stepping or seams? Verify bit depth, mid-value, and the renderer’s subdivision/displacement scale; orientation alone won’t fix scale issues.
