Trim Adaptive excels at shaving surfaces into faceted planes without the harsh “machined” feel. Compared to hard clipping or booleans, it preserves curvature cues while removing noise, making it ideal for rocks, stylized characters, cloth folds, and worn hard-surface edges.

Setup and preparation

  • Work on a DynaMesh stage or a mid-res remesh where topology doesn’t fight your strokes.
  • Enable Brush > Auto Masking > BackfaceMask when trimming thin shells to prevent collapse.
  • Turn on LazyMouse for steadier, straighter passes; reduce LazyStep for more continuous trimming.
  • Use a neutral MatCap (e.g., MatCap Gray) for reliable value read while establishing planes.

Technique that reads well on forms

  • Start with light, short drags to “find” planes; lengthen the stroke only after the angle feels right.
  • Work from silhouette inward: establish the outermost breaks first, then connect secondary planes.

  • Keep ZIntensity modest to reduce over-flattening; build planes in passes.

  • Tablet pressure: light pressure to explore, firmer pressure to commit a plane break.
