ZBrush Tip: Professional Welding and Topology Cleanup in ZBrush

Clean welding in ZBrush is essential when joining imported parts, repairing split seams, or refining low-polygon hard-surface models. The key is to merge only the intended points while preserving the surrounding topology.

Before welding, activate PolyFrame with Shift+F. This displays points, polygon edges, and Polygroup boundaries, making duplicate vertices and open borders much easier to identify. Work at the lowest practical subdivision level; welding is a topology operation and should generally be completed before adding high-resolution sculpted detail.

  • Inspect the seam: Rotate the model and verify that the points genuinely overlap. Two edges may look connected from one angle while remaining separated in 3D space.
  • Use Solo mode: Isolate the active SubTool when nearby geometry makes point selection difficult.
  • Save a duplicate: Duplicate the SubTool before changing topology, especially when the model contains subdivision levels or projected details.

For a controlled weld, select the ZModeler brush with B, Z, M, hover over a point, and press the Spacebar to open its contextual menu. Choose the appropriate Stitch action and target option, then connect the source point to its destination. This method is ideal when only a small number of points need correction.

Remember that an edge is defined by its endpoint vertices. To weld two coincident border edges, align and stitch their corresponding points. Avoid crossing the point order, as this can twist polygons or produce an invalid connection.

For meshes containing many coincident points, use Tool > Geometry > Modify Topology > WeldPoints. ZBrush merges points located within the current welding distance. Increase WeldDist gradually rather than entering an aggressive value immediately.

  • Start with the smallest possible welding distance.
  • Apply WeldPoints and inspect the entire model.
  • Undo immediately if thin parts, panel gaps, fingers, or nearby mechanical components collapse together.
  • Increase the distance only when the intended seam remains open.

Object scale directly affects distance-based welding. If a tiny imported model refuses to weld—or welds too much—check its scale before changing the threshold. Correcting scale often produces more predictable results than repeatedly increasing WeldDist.

After welding, run a quick validation:

  • Use Tool > Geometry > Mesh Integrity > Check Mesh to detect topology problems.
  • Turn PolyFrame off and inspect the surface for shading artifacts.
  • Apply a temporary subdivision to reveal pinching, doubled edges, or malformed polygons.
  • Move the welded area slightly with the Move brush; connected faces should deform as one continuous surface.
  • Confirm that Polygroup borders and creases still behave as intended.

Mirror And Weld is preferable when joining a symmetrical model across an axis, while manual Stitch operations are better for local repairs. Global WeldPoints is fastest for imported meshes with widespread duplicate vertices.
