Revit Tip: Creating Reliable Wall Quantity Schedules in Revit

Wall quantity schedules turn modeled walls into reliable, reviewable data for estimating, procurement, and documentation. The key is to define exactly what is being measured before creating the schedule. A wall schedule can report counts, lengths, areas, volumes, materials, fire ratings, finishes, and type information—but only if the model and schedule fields are configured consistently.

Begin by creating a new schedule through View > Schedules > Schedule/Quantities, then select the Walls category. Give the schedule a clear, purpose-based name, such as “Wall Quantities – Gross Area” or “Wall Quantities – Concrete Volume.” Separate schedules are often more dependable than one overly complex schedule attempting to answer every question.

Choose fields according to the quantity required. Useful standard fields include:

  • Family and Type to identify each wall assembly.
  • Type Mark for concise, drawing-ready wall type references.
  • Length to measure linear wall extent.
  • Area for wall surface quantities.
  • Volume for concrete, masonry, or other volumetric takeoffs.
  • Width and Unconnected Height to validate modeled dimensions.
  • Comments, Keynote, or custom parameters for classification and scope notes.

Next, use the Sorting/Grouping tab to organize results by Type Mark, Family and Type, or a custom classification parameter. Enable Grand Totals and select Totals where applicable. If multiple walls of the same type should be summarized into one line, clear Itemize every instance. Keep this option enabled when the schedule is intended for checking individual wall segments, locations, or exceptions.

Filtering is essential. A quantity schedule should report only the walls included in its intended scope. For example, filter by:

  • Level, phase, or design option.
  • Structural usage or a project-specific wall classification.
  • Type Mark to isolate a package of wall types.
  • A custom “Include in Takeoff” Yes/No parameter.

A custom parameter is especially valuable on complex projects. Rather than relying solely on names or comments, establish a consistent shared or project parameter that controls whether an element belongs in a particular takeoff. This makes quantity reporting easier to audit and reduces accidental inclusion of temporary, existing, demolition, or non-contract elements.

Be deliberate about gross versus net quantities. Revit wall area and volume behavior can be affected by inserts, openings, joins, parts, phase settings, and design intent. Doors and windows may reduce host-wall quantities depending on the reported field and configuration. Before issuing quantities, test a representative wall with known dimensions and openings. Compare the schedule result with a manual calculation and confirm the project’s measurement rules with the estimator or specification requirements.

For material-specific wall quantities, consider creating a Material Takeoff instead of relying only on a standard Walls schedule. A material takeoff can break a compound wall into its individual layers, helping quantify concrete, insulation, gypsum board, finish materials, and other components separately. This is often the better approach when estimating needs material-level data rather than total wall assembly quantities.

Finally, format the schedule for practical review:

  • Set appropriate units, rounding, and unit symbols in Formatting.
  • Use conditional formatting to flag zero volumes, missing Type Marks, or incomplete data.
  • Hide fields that support filters or calculations but do not need to appear in the published schedule.
  • Place the schedule on a sheet when it must be issued as part of the drawing set.
