ZBrush Tip: Preserving Sculpted Detail After DynaMesh Remeshing

DynaMesh is excellent for rebuilding a sculpt’s topology, but the remeshing process can soften or remove fine surface detail. Preserve that detail by keeping the original sculpt and projecting it onto a clean DynaMesh duplicate.

Use this controlled workflow:

  1. Protect the original sculpt. Duplicate the detailed SubTool before activating DynaMesh. Rename the copies clearly—for example, Detail_Source and DynaMesh_Target. Keep the source unchanged so it remains a reliable projection reference.
  2. Prepare the DynaMesh target. Apply DynaMesh to the duplicate at a resolution sufficient to retain the major and secondary forms. Resolve holes, stretched areas, intersections, and silhouette problems before attempting to recover small details.
  3. Subdivide gradually. Turn off the DynaMesh workflow and add standard subdivision levels to the target. The target eventually needs enough polygons to reproduce the source detail accurately, but avoid jumping immediately to an unnecessarily dense mesh.
  4. Set up visibility correctly. Keep the source and target SubTools visible while hiding unrelated SubTools. Select the DynaMesh target as the active SubTool; Project All modifies the active SubTool by sampling the other visible geometry.
  5. Project in stages. Open Tool > SubTool > Project and use Project All. Begin at a lower subdivision level to capture broad forms, subdivide once, and project again. Repeat until the finest details return at the highest level.

Settings and precautions that improve the result:

  • Start with a conservative Dist value. Excessive projection distance can pull polygons onto nearby surfaces, especially around fingers, lips, eyelids, straps, and thin armor panels.
  • Use a small amount of projection blur when the result becomes noisy, but avoid values that soften intentional pores, seams, or engraved marks.
  • Store a Morph Target before the final projection. If isolated spikes appear, use the Morph Brush to restore the clean pre-projection surface locally.
  • Project difficult regions separately. Hide geometry or isolate Polygroups so opposing surfaces cannot attract the same vertices.
  • Inspect the silhouette after every pass. Projection should restore surface information, not replace careful form correction.

If artifacts persist, undo rather than smoothing the entire area. Reduce the projection distance, separate intersecting parts into temporary SubTools, or move the target slightly closer to the source. Local projection passes are usually safer than one aggressive global operation.

Save incremental project versions before remeshing and projection. A clean source, staged subdivision, and restrained settings make detail transfer predictable while preserving the structural benefits of DynaMesh.
