ZBrush Tip: Preserving Sculpt Detail with ZBrush Decimation Master

Decimation Master reduces polygon counts while preserving the visible detail of a finished sculpt. It is especially useful when preparing dense ZBrush models for rendering, real-time previews, 3D printing, or transfer to another application.

Before decimating, save an incremental copy of your project. Decimation permanently changes topology, so retain the original subdivided model for future sculpting, texture changes, and displacement-map generation. Artists building a production pipeline can explore ZBrush solutions at NOVEDGE.

  • Duplicate critical SubTools: Keep an untouched version inside the project or save a separate ZTool.
  • Finish major sculpting first: Decimated topology is optimized for shape preservation, not subdivision-based editing or animation deformation.
  • Remove unnecessary geometry: Delete hidden polygons and discard interior surfaces that will never be seen, unless they are required for fabrication.
  • Check the silhouette: Thin edges, fingers, horns, and sharp mechanical corners need enough polygons to retain their profiles.

Open ZPlugin > Decimation Master. Start by selecting Pre-process Current for one SubTool or Pre-process All for a model containing several SubTools. Pre-processing analyzes the surface and determines where polygon density is most valuable. Dense areas are retained around curvature and sculpted detail, while flatter regions can be simplified more aggressively.

After preprocessing, choose a target percentage and click Decimate Current or Decimate All. Avoid jumping immediately to the lowest possible value. Test progressively:

  • 20–30%: A practical first pass for many high-resolution sculpts.
  • 5–15%: Useful for lightweight presentation, export, or print preparation when carefully inspected.
  • Below 5%: Best reserved for distant objects, simple forms, or situations with strict polygon limits.

Judge the result by polygon count and appearance—not percentage alone. Rotate the model under contrasting materials, inspect the silhouette, and compare important features at the intended viewing distance. A model that looks unchanged in a final render does not need to preserve every microscopic polygon.

Masks can help direct polygon distribution. Mask important areas before preprocessing so they retain greater density; vary mask intensity to create a more gradual influence. This is helpful for faces, hands, logos, engraved text, and delicate edges. When applicable, enable options for preserving UVs, Polypaint, borders, or creases. Preservation requirements may limit how aggressively ZBrush can simplify the mesh, so only retain data needed downstream.

For multi-part assets, process SubTools according to importance. A face may require considerably more geometry than a smooth base, hidden connector, or simple accessory. This produces a better overall polygon budget than applying one percentage indiscriminately.

Finally, export the decimated version under a clear name such as character_print_decimated_v03. Reopen the exported file in its destination application and verify scale, normals, surface integrity, and material assignments.
