ZBrush Tip: PolyPaint to Texture Map Workflow in ZBrush

  1. Prepare UVs
    • If your mesh has no UVs, create them with Tool > UV Master (Enable Symmetry if needed, then Unwrap).
    • Inspect with Tool > UV Map > Morph UV to verify islands and coverage.
  2. Set texture size before baking
    • Go to Tool > UV Map and choose a size (2048, 4096, or 8192). This determines the Texture Map resolution created from PolyPaint.
  3. Ensure high-fidelity PolyPaint
    • Subdivide so vertex density supports your target map. As a rule of thumb, aim for roughly 1 vertex per texel across occupied UV space (for 4K, ~8–16M points depending on coverage).
    • Fill a solid base color first (Color > FillObject) to avoid unpainted micro-gaps.
  4. Convert PolyPaint to Texture
    • With the subtool active and Colorize On, go to Tool > Texture Map > Create > New From Polypaint.
    • The Texture Map thumbnail will populate at the size set in Tool > UV Map.
  5. Inspect and fix seams
    • Toggle Tool > UV Map > Morph UV while Texture is visible to spot seams or stretching.
    • If needed, return to 3D view, touch up paint near seams, and recreate the texture.
  6. Export the texture
    • Tool > Texture Map > Clone Txtr, then go to the top Texture palette > Export (PNG/TIF/PSD).
    • Flip V if your target app expects a different vertical orientation (Multi Map Exporter can automate this).
  7. Batch export for multi‑subtool assets
    • Use Zplugin > Multi Map Exporter (MME). Enable Texture from Polypaint, set Map Size, UDIM/UV Tiles naming if applicable, Flip V, and Border (padding) 16–32 px.
  8. Verify downstream
    • In your DCC/engine, assign the exported texture to Base Color/Albedo and check gamma (sRGB) is enabled for color maps.
  • Seam minimization: keep broad brush strokes and avoid extreme contrast right on UV borders; increase padding (MME Border) for mip-safe assets.
  • Multiple tiles: ZBrush’s UV Tiles (UDIM-style) can be exported via MME with UDIM naming for apps that support it.
  • Performance tip: If the baked texture looks blurry, either increase subdivision (more PolyPaint detail) or raise the UV Map size before recreating the texture.
  • Color management: Albedo/BaseColor maps are 8-bit and should be interpreted as sRGB. Avoid applying color “levels” meant for linear data.
  • Quality check: Use a checker or curvature display in your DCC to quickly spot stretching that may deserve a UV edit and a rebake from PolyPaint.
  • Automation: Save an MME preset for consistent exports across assets and teams.
