ZBrush Tip: Move Topological: Precise Island Editing

Move Topological lets you nudge only the connected “island” under your cursor—ideal when parts sit close together and standard Move would accidentally grab neighbors. It’s a small switch in behavior that pays off across clothing, fingers, eyelids, and kitbashed assets.

Quick setup

  • Select the brush: B > M > T (Move Topological).
  • Or enable it on any brush: Brush > Auto Masking > Topological (set a sensible Range).
  • Visualize islands: Shift+F (PolyFrame) so you can see polygroups and check connectivity.

Core settings that matter

  • Topological Range: Start at 1–3 for tight isolation. Increase only if the island has sparse connectivity. If you see “leaks” to nearby parts, lower this or reduce Draw Size.
  • BackFaceMask (Brush > Auto Masking): Prevents pulling the opposite side of thin shells (clothes, eyelids).
  • AccuCurve (Brush > Curve > AccuCurve): Sharper, more surgical moves—great for fingertips, nostrils, lip corners.
  • Focal Shift: Try −20 to −40 to tighten falloff and reduce collateral deformation.
  • Draw Size: Keep it just large enough to encompass the area you want; smaller sizes make island isolation more predictable.

When to reach for Move Topological

  • Hands and feet: Adjust a single finger or toe without tugging its neighbors.
  • Eyelids and lips: Reposition lids or refine mouth corners without dragging the cheek.
  • Clothing and straps: Slide belts, seams, and folds over a body without catching underlying anatomy.
  • Hair clumps and cables: Shape individual strands/tubes in crowded bundles.
  • Jewelry and kitbash parts: Tweak one piece in a dense assembly safely.

Island-aware workflow tips

  • If everything is one welded surface, make it island-friendly first: use polygroups and Mask By PolyGroups (Brush > Auto Masking) or separate parts with SliceCurve + Split to Parts.
  • For broad shape moves, drop to a lower subdivision, push forms with Move Topological, then step back up to preserve detail.
  • Need volume preservation on long pulls? Try Move Elastic; need crisp pinches? Move Accu.
  • Dynamesh or Sculptris Pro users: Perform big layout changes with islands, then remesh to consolidate once positioning feels right.

Common pitfalls (and fixes)

  • Accidentally grabbing nearby geometry: Lower Draw Size or Topological Range; toggle BackFaceMask.
  • Mushy edges after big moves: Enable AccuCurve or briefly switch to HPolish/TrimDynamic to re-establish planes.
  • Performance dip at high poly: Use lower subdiv for moves, or temporarily hide distant subtools (Solo/visibility sets).

Pro move: Pair Move Topological with saved camera views for consistent before/after checks, then finalize with a quick polish pass. For licenses, upgrades, and more workflow pointers, explore ZBrush options at NOVEDGE and the ZBrush collection on NOVEDGE.
