Today’s tip focuses on using the Clip brushes to create fast, crisp, hard edges in ZBrush while keeping your sculpting flow efficient and intentional.

Why use Clip brushes:

  • They instantly flatten geometry to a plane or shape, perfect for hard-surface blocking and clean bevel foundations.
  • They preserve polygon count (they project points instead of deleting), which makes them great for quick shape refinement.
  • They’re predictable when used from orthographic, aligned views for industrial or mechanical details.

Core tools to know:

  • ClipCurve: Draws a cutting curve to push geometry to a plane.
  • ClipRect, ClipCircle: Constrain to rectangular or circular planes for rapid, clean trims.
  • ClipLasso: Freeform boundary for more organic hard-surface decisions.

How to use them effectively:

  • Access: Hold Ctrl+Shift and select ClipCurve/ClipRect/ClipCircle/ClipLasso from the selection brushes.
  • Direction: While drawing the stroke, note the shaded/gradient side—this is the direction the surface will be pushed. Flip direction before releasing if needed.
  • Corners and curves: Tap Alt as you draw ClipCurve to insert a sharp corner or change the curve’s tension, allowing stepped or faceted planes.
  • Precision: Work in orthographic view and snap the camera (hold Shift while orbiting) to align clips to world axes for truly planar results.
  • Scope control: Hide geometry (Ctrl+Shift to hide/show) you don’t want affected; Clip pushes all visible polygons along the clip plane.

Clean-up and refinement:

  • If you see pinching or folded surfaces (a natural result of projection), run Deformation > Polish or Polish by Features to unify planes without erasing crisp edges.
  • Need production-ready topology? ZRemesher with KeepGroups, then Crease PG and apply Dynamic Subdivision to preview hold lines.
  • For watertight cuts, prefer Trim brushes; Clip preserves topology count and can compress faces internally—great for blockout, less ideal for final boolean-like results.

Recommended workflow:

  • Duplicate your SubTool before aggressive clipping for easy A/B comparisons.
  • Polygroup strategically (Auto Groups by Normals) so you can isolate and polish by features right after clipping.
  • Clip to establish planes, then add controlled bevels with Group Loops or ZModeler for design-grade edges.
  • Project details back if needed: after cleanup or retopo, use Project All to recover high-frequency information.

Troubleshooting tips:

  • Jagged edges after clip: temporarily increase mesh density (Dynamesh resolution up or quick subdivide) before clipping, then refine.
  • Unwanted back-side deformation: hide the back faces or split into parts, then Clip on isolated pieces.
  • Uneven planes: clip from a locked orthographic camera and follow with a light Polish by Features pass.
