ZBrush Tip: Dial Projection Strength for Cleaner Detail and Color Transfer

Dial in how much detail and color transfer during projection for cleaner, faster results and fewer artifacts.

Where to control projection strength

  • SubTool > Project > Project All
    • Strength: Governs how forcefully points on the target snap to the source detail. Lower values with multiple passes usually yield cleaner transfers.
    • Dist: Maximum search distance for rays to find the source. Set just high enough to bridge gaps without overshooting distant surfaces.
    • PA Blur: Slightly softens the projection to reduce micro-spikes and chatter on dense meshes.
  • Projection-capable brushes (e.g., ZProject, History Recall)
    • Brush > Modifiers > Projection Strength (per-brush): Fine-tunes how aggressively the brush pulls to the reference surface/state.
    • ZIntensity/RGB Intensity: Secondary controls for geometry and color transfer strength.

Reliable projection workflow (retopo or cleanup)

  • Prep
    • Subdivide the retopologized mesh to a level comparable to the source detail.
    • Store Morph Target and/or create a new Layer on the target subtool to non-destructively dial projection back after the fact.
    • Organize with PolyGroups and hide nonessential areas to confine rays to what you need.
  • Project in stages
    • Start with low Strength (for example 0.1–0.3), moderate PA Blur (1–3), and a conservative Dist.
    • Run Project All, inspect, then repeat in a few passes instead of one aggressive pass.
    • Step up subdivision levels and repeat. Projecting per level keeps forms clean and avoids shrinkwrapping artifacts.
  • Color transfer
    • Enable RGB on the target and ensure the source has Polypaint. Project All will transfer color alongside geometry.

Preventing and fixing artifacts

  • Through-surface hits on thin parts
    • Isolate front-facing polygons (hide the back side) and enable Auto Masking > BackfaceMasking for projection brushes.
    • Lower Dist and Strength, or inflate the target slightly (Deformation > Inflate) before projection, then deflate after.
  • Spikes or chatter on edges
    • Increase PA Blur slightly, reduce Strength, and project in multiple passes.
    • Use the Morph brush to paint back problem zones using the stored Morph Target, or fade with the Layer slider.
  • Missed details in cavities
    • Increment Dist carefully until rays reach recessed forms without jumping across islands.
    • Temporarily relax the source with a tiny Smooth pass, project, then reapply edge crisping (HPolish/Pinch).

Pro tips

  • Project what you see: hide distant parts and overlapping shells to accelerate rays and reduce false hits.
  • For hard-surface, keep edges creased prior to projecting to prevent unintended rounding, then uncrease if needed afterward.
  • When using History-based projection brushes, start with lower Projection Strength and build up with light strokes for precise control.
