V-Ray Tip: Pair Object and Material IDs for Precise Layered Masks

Pair Material ID and Object ID to build precise, layered selections that speed compositing and keep looks consistent from first preview to final delivery.

Why use both?

  • Top-down control: Object ID isolates whole assets quickly (cars, characters, rooms).
  • Granular refinement: Material ID targets surfaces across multiple objects (all chrome, all glass, all paint).
  • Stable masks: IDs remain consistent across shots, rigs, and instances when managed properly.
  • Lean AOVs: MultiMatte-style passes pack three precise masks per element, reducing EXR size versus heavier selections.

Setup checklist (host-agnostic)

  • Assign Object IDs at the object or node level. Reserve ranges by asset to avoid collisions.
  • Assign Material IDs in the material editor or per-sub-material for Multi/Sub-Object setups.
  • Add Render Elements:
    • Object ID and Material ID passes for integer-based masks.
    • MultiMatte elements (RGB) to pack three IDs per pass; pick source = Object or Material IDs.
  • Filtering/AA: Enable anti-aliasing for MultiMatte. Integer ID passes are typically hard-edged; use MultiMatte for clean edges.
  • Refractions: Set refractive materials to “Affect channels: All” so IDs propagate through glass and glossy layers.
  • Instances/Proxies: Confirm per-instance Object ID overrides where needed; keep Material IDs identical across libraries for consistency.

Layered selection recipes

  1. Isolate one asset fast: Use Object ID as the base mask. Great for per-asset relighting or grading.
  2. Refine within an asset: Intersect Object ID (car) with Material ID (paint) to adjust only the body coat, leaving tires/glass untouched.
  3. Global material tweaks: Use Material ID to grade all chrome across the scene; subtract a specific Object ID to exclude a hero prop.
  4. Three-at-once edits: Use MultiMatte (RGB) to output three clean masks per element—ideal for iterative lookdev and lighter EXRs.

Edge fidelity and post tips

  • Prefer MultiMatte for anti-aliased masks; expand/contract 0.5–1.5 px in comp for perfect seams.
  • For DoF/Motion Blur shots, test mask stability; if fringing persists, add a Cryptomatte alongside IDs for edge-critical areas.
  • Premult/unpremult correctly in comp; use linear EXR workflow and consistent color management (ACES or your facility standard).

Management best practices

  • Adopt a studio-wide ID registry (Object ID by asset, Material ID by material class).
  • Embed ID assignments into asset publish steps and proxies to ensure cross-shot consistency.
  • Name Render Elements clearly (e.g., MM_Obj_01, MM_Mat_Chrome) to streamline handoffs.

When to add Cryptomatte

  • Use Material/Object IDs for speed, small files, and deterministic selections.
  • Add Cryptomatte for complex transparency, hair, and heavy DoF/MB—keep both for maximum flexibility.
