Prepare safely
- Duplicate your sculpted SubTool (Tool > SubTool > Duplicate). Keep the original for projection.
- Enable PolyFrame (Shift+F) for clear visual feedback.

Anchor form with Polygroups
- Create Polygroups around landmarks (eyes, mouth, nostrils, ears, joints, panel lines): Group Visible, Group by Normals, or Group by Mask.
- Turn on KeepGroups in ZRemesher to lock those boundaries into the new topology.

Draw ZRemesher Guides
- Select the ZRemesher Guides brush (Brush palette) and sketch curves where you want loops to flow: around the mouth/eyes, along the jawline, down limbs, or across hard edges.
- Favor long, clean guides that follow primary forms; avoid dense scribbles—fewer, well-placed curves work better.
- Mirror your guides across symmetry for consistent results (Transform > Activate Symmetry).

Core ZRemesher settings
- Target Polygons Count: set a realistic goal for the current stage (e.g., 5–15k for heads, 10–30k for bodies).
- Adaptive Size: 0–10 for uniform quads; 20–50 to preserve more form detail.
- Curve Strength: increase if guides are being ignored; decrease for more automated flow.
- KeepGroups ON to preserve group borders; Smooth Groups at low values to soften internal transitions.
- Keep Creases ON if you’ve defined hard edges via Crease.
- Detect Edges ON for hard-surface; OFF for organic sculpts.

Density where it matters
- Enable Use Polypaint and paint white where you need more density (mouth corners, eyelids, knuckles); paint darker where you want fewer polygons.
- Tune Polypaint Strength to balance density distribution.

Execute and iterate
- Click ZRemesher. If loops miss targets, raise Curve Strength, refine guides, or add supportive Polygroups.
- Use Half/Double to quickly step polycount down or up while preserving flow.
- For open borders, enable Freeze Border to maintain silhouette edges.

Project details back
- Subdivide the new mesh incrementally and use Project All after each level to recover form and micro detail from the original.
- Clean with Smooth (light pressure) between projections to avoid lumpiness.
- Organic targets: Establish circular loops for eyes and mouth, flowing rings around shoulders/hips, and longitudinal loops down arms/legs for deformation-friendly skinning.
- Hard-surface targets: Crease critical breaks, use Polygroups for panels, keep Adaptive Size higher, and lean on Detect Edges to retain corners.
- Troubleshooting
- Guides ignored: Increase Curve Strength, simplify curves, and ensure symmetry is active.
- Spirals or pinching: Lower Adaptive Size; add a polygroup seam or an extra guide across the trouble area.
- Stretchy quads: Paint density or raise Target Polygons Count; insert a guide perpendicular to the stretch direction.
- Jagged borders (holes/shells): Enable Freeze Border; Check normals and close micro-holes before remeshing.
- Speed tips
- Lightly decimate very dense scans before guiding to speed up iterations.
- Work broad-to-narrow: establish major loops first, then refine density with polypaint or a second pass.
