Use MaskLasso when a painted mask needs a crisp, deliberate boundary. Unlike MaskPen, which follows the brush cursor, MaskLasso lets you draw a freeform selection around an area, making it especially effective for armor panels, clothing sections, facial regions, and hard-surface details.
To activate it, hold Ctrl to access ZBrush’s masking brushes, open the Brush palette, and select MaskLasso. Continue holding Ctrl while drawing the lasso around the area you want to protect. Closing the shape applies the mask immediately.
- Add to a mask: Hold Ctrl and draw around another region.
- Subtract from a mask: Hold Ctrl+Alt while drawing the lasso.
- Clear the mask: Hold Ctrl and drag on an empty area of the canvas.
- Invert the mask: Ctrl-click an empty canvas area without dragging.
For sharper results, zoom in before drawing. MaskLasso is screen-based, so the visible silhouette and camera angle directly affect the selection. Rotate the model and inspect the opposite side after masking, particularly when working without symmetry. If only the visible surface should be selected, verify that masking is not unintentionally affecting back-facing polygons.
A useful workflow is to create the initial mask with MaskPen, then use MaskLasso to trim its perimeter. Hold Ctrl+Alt and cut away unwanted areas with short, controlled lasso shapes. This is often faster than trying to paint a perfect border in one pass.
For hard-surface work, combine MaskLasso with these operations:
- Use Tool > Masking > SharpenMask to increase contrast along a partially softened boundary.
- Apply Grow Mask or Shrink Mask to reposition the edge by approximately one polygon row.
- Use Mask By Polygroups when the desired boundary already follows established topology.
- Invert the finished mask and use Gizmo 3D to move, scale, or extrude the exposed region.
Remember that mask sharpness is limited by mesh density. On a low-resolution mesh, the edge must follow relatively large polygons and may appear stepped. Subdivide the model, increase Dynamesh resolution, or establish cleaner topology before expecting a highly precise contour. Avoid subdividing solely to repair a poor mask; first confirm that the underlying topology supports the intended form.
When creating panel recesses, mask the panel shape, sharpen the mask once, invert it, and apply a small inward deformation. Follow with Polish by Features or a restrained smoothing pass. Excessive sharpening can produce abrupt transitions or pinching, so evaluate the result with a neutral MatCap and from several angles.
Save reusable selections by converting the completed mask into a Polygroup through Tool > Polygroups > Group Masked. This turns a temporary mask into a reliable selection boundary for later sculpting, visibility control, extraction, or Boolean preparation.
