Complex roofs are often best modeled with Roof by Footprint because the tool combines a clear plan-based boundary with precise control over slopes, overhangs, and roof behavior. The key is to build the footprint intentionally before adding detail geometry. A well-structured roof sketch is easier to edit, coordinate, and document throughout the project.
Start in a plan view at the correct level, then use Architecture > Roof > Roof by Footprint. Before drawing, confirm the base level, offset, and desired roof type. Use a roof type with the correct assembly, thickness, materials, and structural behavior rather than creating a generic placeholder that must be replaced later.
For multi-wing buildings, avoid forcing every condition into one oversized footprint. Separate roof volumes are often more manageable when ridges differ, roof types change, or construction sequencing matters. Model each major mass as its own roof, then use Join/Unjoin Roof or Join Geometry where appropriate. This approach makes later edits much less disruptive.
Use shape editing only when the roof requires localized points, split lines, valleys, crickets, or drainage transitions that cannot be represented by perimeter slopes alone. Shape editing is powerful, but it can make a roof harder to understand and modify. Start with the simplest footprint solution, then add only the minimum shape controls needed to achieve the intended design.
After creating the roof, verify it in several views:
When walls must follow the underside of a sloped roof, use Attach Top/Base carefully. This is effective for stable perimeter walls, but avoid attaching elements that are likely to change independently, since repeated roof revisions can propagate extensive wall edits.
Finally, name roof types and views clearly, and use schedules or filters to distinguish roofing assemblies across the project. Consistent modeling standards reduce coordination errors with structural framing, insulation, drainage, and exterior detailing.
