ZBrush Tip: Controlling Planes for Crisp ZBrush Edges

Crisp edges in ZBrush come from controlling planes rather than simply increasing brush strength. The Polish family of brushes is especially effective for hard-surface models, armor, props, and stylized anatomy because it flattens local areas while preserving a clean transition between adjacent surfaces.

Start with a mesh that has enough polygon density to support the intended edge. Select hPolish from the Brush palette, reduce Z Intensity to approximately 15–25, and use a medium-to-large Draw Size. Work across the surface with deliberate strokes instead of tracing the edge directly. As neighboring planes become flatter, the boundary between them naturally appears sharper.

  • Polish the planes, not the border: Run strokes parallel to each surface surrounding the edge. Sculpting directly over the border can round it or create an unwanted groove.
  • Use light pressure: Tablet pressure provides gradual control. Several low-intensity passes usually produce a cleaner result than one aggressive stroke.
  • Change brush size frequently: Large brushes establish broad, consistent planes; smaller brushes refine corners and narrow transitions.
  • Rotate the model often: Check the silhouette and highlights from several angles. An edge may look sharp from the front while remaining uneven in profile.

For stronger planar behavior, adjust the brush’s Focal Shift. A tighter falloff concentrates the polishing action, while a softer falloff creates broader transitions. Avoid extreme settings until the major forms are stable. If hPolish begins to pull a surface too far, hold Alt to test the brush’s inverse behavior, or undo and rebuild the plane with lighter passes.

Masking is useful when one side of an edge must remain untouched. Paint a precise mask, sharpen it if necessary, and polish the exposed plane. Slightly blur the mask when you want a narrow bevel instead of a razor-like division. For thin panels, enable Brush > Auto Masking > BackfaceMask so polishing the front does not deform the reverse side.

A reliable hard-surface sequence is:

  1. Establish the primary shape with Move, Clay Buildup, or DynaMesh.
  2. Define major plane changes with Trim Dynamic.
  3. Use hPolish at low intensity to even out each plane.
  4. Refine edge width with controlled masking or Crease tools.
  5. Inspect the result under a reflective MatCap that clearly reveals waviness.

Do not over-polish. Repeated strokes can shrink forms, erase intentional asymmetry, and make every edge look mechanically identical. Preserve a hierarchy: primary edges should read clearly from a distance, secondary edges can be softer, and tiny accents should support—not compete with—the overall design. Store a Morph Target or create a sculpting Layer before the final pass so excessive polishing can be corrected non-destructively.

For production work, combine sculpted polish with clean topology, creases, and Dynamic Subdivision when perfectly controlled manufactured edges are required.
