ZBrush Tip: BPR Filter Stack and Masking Workflow for ZBrush Renders

BPR Filters let you stack non-destructive post effects directly in ZBrush to finalize looks fast—no round-trips. Perfect for concept frames, cel/toon looks, and presentation sheets. If you need ZBrush or upgrades, check out NOVEDGE.

Core workflow (5-minute setup):

  • Switch to BPR (Best Preview Render). Open Render > BPR Filters.
  • Enable a few Filter slots (F0, F1, F2...). Order matters: top filters process first.
  • Run a BPR once to populate AO/Shadow/Depth passes used by masks.
  • Use each filter’s Type, Blend, and Strength. Add masks (AO, Shadow, Cavity, Depth) to keep effects targeted.
  • Iterate: adjust Lights/Materials, re-render BPR, and refine filters—filters update instantly.

High-impact filter stack for stylized/composited looks:

  • Edge Detect (outline): Set low Threshold, medium Strength. Mask by Cavity or by Depth to avoid outlining flat areas.
  • Posterize (toon bands): Posterize Shading to 3–5 steps; mask by Shadow to keep banding on lit zones only.
  • Contrast/Curves: Subtle S-curve to deepen forms; mask by AO for creases and contact areas.
  • Blur/Sharpen: Use gentle Blur with Depth mask for DOF-like separation; add slight Sharpen on mid-tones to recover crispness.
  • Colorize/Tint: Warm highlights, cool shadows. Mask by Fresnel/Depth to tint rims without flooding the image.
  • Grain/Noise: Low-intensity luma noise to unify renders and hide banding—apply after color operations.

Masking essentials for clean composites:

  • Mask by AO: Enhances creases and grounding. Great for stylized ink looks.
  • Mask by Shadow: Keeps grade changes inside cast/receive shadows—prevents haloing.
  • Mask by Depth (FDepth): Controls foreground vs. background effects (blur, haze, tint).
  • Mask by Material/Polypaint: Isolate specific materials or colored parts for per-material grading.

Presentation-friendly render passes:

  • After dialing filters, export passes (RenderPass): Beauty, Shadow, AO, Depth, Mask. This preserves flexibility for external comp.
  • Use the same filter stack as a look-dev baseline, and blend with passes in your DCC to fine-tune.

Practical tips:

  • Subtlety wins: stack multiple light touches instead of one heavy effect.
  • Work at final output size; BPR Filters are resolution-dependent.
  • Rerun BPR after changing lights/materials to refresh AO/Shadow/Depth for accurate masks.
  • Save and reuse: store your filter stack as a preset and load it across projects for consistent branding.
  • For toon ink: Edge Detect + Posterize + AO mask, then a gentle paper-grain Noise.
  • For product shots: Contrast curve + cool rim Colorize via Fresnel + Depth Blur for separation.

Troubleshooting:

  • Harsh halos: Lower Strength or blend with Screen/Overlay; add a small Blur to the outline.
  • Crushed blacks: Reduce Contrast; lift shadows with Curves; check gamma in export.
  • Soft image: Apply Sharpen masked by mid-range Depth, not globally.
