Bluebeam Tip: Streamline Symbol-Based Counts with VisualSearch

Speed symbol-based counts with VisualSearch to eliminate tedious manual tallies and reduce errors.

  • Open the Search panel and switch to Visual. Drag a rectangle around one clear instance of the symbol you want to count (e.g., diffuser, receptacle, sprinkler head).
  • Set the search scope:
    • Current Document for a quick pass.
    • Open PDFs for active sets.
    • Folder to scan entire packages and revisions in one go.
  • Tune recognition for accuracy:
    • Adjust Sensitivity to balance false positives and misses. Lower values are stricter; higher values catch more variations.
    • Enable color/greyscale processing to ignore ink color differences between disciplines.
    • Allow rotation/scale variance if symbols appear at different angles or sizes.
  • Review results efficiently:
    • Use the results list to zoom and verify; deselect outliers with a single click.
    • Check All (or selected) results and apply a Count measurement directly from the results menu.
    • Choose a custom Count symbol from your Tool Chest for consistent graphics and data fields.
  • Turn results into actionable data:
    • In the Markups List, add custom columns (Trade, CSI, Cost Code, Phase) and apply values in bulk.
    • Group by Subject or Page to validate distributions across the set.
    • Export to CSV for estimating or dashboards; share with your team via your standard templates.
  • Pro tips:
    • Build a Tool Set with discipline-specific Count tools; predefine colors, subjects, and statuses for rapid QA/QC.
    • Use Layers and Spaces to isolate floors, zones, or trades before running VisualSearch for cleaner results.
    • Combine with Auto Count when drawings use consistent CAD blocks; fall back to VisualSearch for scans or varied symbology.
    • Flatten counts before external issue to prevent accidental edits.
