V-Ray Tip: V-Ray Frame Buffer Histogram and Exposure Workflow

Use the V-Ray Frame Buffer’s histogram and exposure controls to balance dynamic range quickly, protect highlights, and keep color decisions consistent across shots—without round-tripping to comp.

  • Read the histogram at a glance
    • Left = shadows, middle = midtones, right = highlights. Avoid hard spikes at the edges (clipping) unless artistically intended.
    • Switch to Luma for perceived brightness; use per-channel views to spot color casts or channel clipping.
    • Aim for a healthy midtone mass (roughly 40–60%) in balanced, photoreal interiors and exteriors.
  • Camera-first, VFB-second
    • Start with physically plausible camera settings (F-number, shutter, ISO) so DoF and motion blur are correct.
    • Use a VFB Exposure layer for trims. Keep adjustments within about ±1 EV; if you need more, revisit lighting or camera.
    • White balance in the VFB with the picker on a neutral surface to remove color casts early.
  • Protect highlights and lift shadows
    • Use Curves or Levels layers to nudge contrast: add a gentle S-curve; anchor the top end to avoid blowing out speculars and skies.
    • Watch the histogram’s clipping indicators while adjusting. Roll back when the right edge pins.
    • For interiors with bright windows, balance with LightMix first, then finalize exposure and curves.
  • Noise vs exposure
    • Brightening exposure reveals noise. If you push EV up, expect to add a bit more sampling or lean on the V-Ray Denoiser.
    • Evaluate noise in the mid-to-dark range; the histogram helps you spot where grain will be most visible.
  • Color management sanity checks
    • Confirm your VFB display color space (e.g., sRGB or ACEScg workflow). A mismatched display transform skews the histogram.
    • If you are using LUTs, place exposure before the LUT so it behaves predictably.
  • Save flexible outputs
    • For maximum latitude, save a 16/32-bit EXR without baked corrections, plus a JPG/PNG with “Save with color corrections” for quick reviews.
    • Store your VFB color correction stack as a preset and reuse it across shots for continuity.
  • Fast workflow checklist
    • Set camera exposure realistically.
    • Balance lights with LightMix (if used).
    • Trim with VFB Exposure (EV in 0.25 steps).
    • White balance with the picker.
    • Refine contrast with Curves/Levels while watching the histogram.
    • Apply denoising if exposure was lifted.
    • Save EXR linear + review image with corrections.
