A V-Ray Dome Light is one of the fastest ways to create believable ambient illumination, reflections, and environmental context in a scene. Whether you are rendering architecture, products, or vehicles, a dome light paired with a high-quality HDRI can establish a convincing lighting foundation before adding any artificial fixtures.

Start by creating a Dome Light and assigning an HDRI image to its texture or color input. Unlike a flat background image, an HDRI contains high-dynamic-range lighting information. Bright areas in the map, such as the sun, windows, or studio softboxes, become real illumination sources in the render.
A common mistake is judging the dome only by the brightness of the scene. A good HDRI setup should provide shape and visual direction. For example, a bright region placed off to one side can create a controlled highlight along the edge of a product, while a darker area facing the camera can help preserve contrast.
When using a daylight HDRI, avoid stacking a V-Ray Sun at full strength without first evaluating the image. If the HDRI already contains a visible sun, adding another sun may create conflicting shadows and unnatural double highlights. You can either use the HDRI alone, reduce its intensity, or use a separate V-Ray Sun only when you need more directable shadows.
Keep the background and lighting decisions separate when necessary. You may want an HDRI to light and reflect in the scene, while using a different background plate or a solid color behind the model. V-Ray’s environment controls and dome-light options make this possible, helping you preserve a desired visual composition without sacrificing realistic illumination.
Also pay attention to resolution. Low-resolution HDRIs can appear blurred in reflections or panoramic backgrounds, especially on reflective objects. Use higher-resolution maps for close-up product shots and polished materials; lower-resolution HDRIs may be sufficient when the environment is visible only as soft, distorted reflections.
Finally, do not compensate for an unsuitable HDRI by dramatically increasing its multiplier. Excessive intensity can cause clipped highlights, noisy reflections, and flat color relationships. Choose an HDRI with the right exposure and contrast first, then make modest intensity adjustments through the Dome Light, camera exposure, or V-Ray Frame Buffer corrections.
