Extension snaps help you place points precisely beyond the visible end of existing geometry. Instead of drawing temporary construction lines or calculating offsets manually, AutoCAD can project an implied continuation from an object’s endpoint. This is especially useful for aligning walls, equipment, details, grids, and annotation geometry.
In AutoCAD, the Extension object snap does not physically extend an object. It provides a temporary tracking path from a qualifying snap point, allowing you to select a new point that is collinear with the existing linework.
OSNAP command. To use an extension snap during a command such as LINE, MOVE, or COPY, start the command and move the cursor over the endpoint of a line, arc, or polyline segment. Pause briefly until AutoCAD recognizes the reference point. Then move the cursor away in the direction of the object’s implied continuation. AutoCAD displays a temporary alignment path. When the cursor reaches the desired location, click to place the point.
For best results, combine Extension with other precision tools:
1200, and AutoCAD places the new point 1200 drawing units beyond the acquired point.A common mistake is moving the cursor too quickly past the endpoint. AutoCAD needs a moment to acquire the snap point and establish the extension vector. Watch for the Extension snap marker and temporary tracking line before clicking. If several nearby objects compete for attention, zoom in, temporarily isolate layers, or invoke Extension as a one-time object snap override.
Remember that Extension is a placement aid, not an editing command. If the design intent is to lengthen geometry until it reaches another boundary, use EXTEND. If you only need to locate a new point beyond existing geometry without altering that geometry, Extension snap is the cleaner choice.
Developing a consistent precision workflow with object snaps, tracking, and direct distance entry reduces cleanup work and makes drawings more reliable. For AutoCAD software, training, and professional CAD tools, visit NOVEDGE.
