V-Ray Tip: High Light Cache for Stable Final GI

For final frames, set Light Cache to High to lock in clean, stable secondary GI without runaway render times. Here’s how to make the most of it across CPU and GPU.

  • Why “High” for finals:
    • Improves secondary bounce detail and reduces splotches in corners and contact areas.
    • Stabilizes GI for subtle gradients and glossy layers that often chatter at lower settings.
    • Gives the denoiser less to fix, preserving texture fidelity and micro-contrast.
  • Baseline setup (stills and hero frames):
    • Primary GI: Brute Force. Secondary GI: Light Cache set to High.
    • Enable Retrace to minimize light leaks near edges and thin geometry; raise modestly only if leaks persist.
    • Keep Filter at Nearest for crisp detail; increase filtering slightly only to calm minor blotches.
    • Avoid “Use LC for glossy rays” on finals; it’s faster but can smear reflections.
  • Sample size and detail control:
    • Interiors with tight geometry: reduce LC sample size a notch for better corner detail.
    • Large exteriors: a slightly larger sample size can be faster while remaining artifact-free.
    • Only push subdivs beyond the High preset if you still see GI splotches after tuning sample size and Retrace.
  • Animation notes:
    • Camera fly-throughs: use Fly-through mode, compute once, save to file, and reuse across frames for flicker-free GI.
    • Enable LC prefiltering when reusing a cache across many frames to smooth minor temporal jitter.
    • For object/lighting animation, prefer per-frame caches and keep Light Cache at High; combine with a conservative denoise pass for stability.
  • GPU guidance:
    • V-Ray GPU uses Light Cache as the secondary GI. Set LC Quality to High to curb secondary bounce noise in interiors.
    • Match your GPU bucket/progressive settings to keep LC computation fed; avoid overly small bucket sizes that starve throughput.
  • Quality vs time trade-offs:
    • “Very High” offers diminishing returns; try High + slightly smaller sample size before escalating.
    • Use Adaptive Lights in scenes with many fixtures to reduce GI evaluation cost while keeping LC High.
    • Let LC do the heavy lifting; the V-Ray Denoiser should finish, not fix, your GI.
  • Debug checklist for stubborn blotches:
    • Confirm normals and double-sided geometry are clean; LC can magnify mesh issues.
    • Check overly bright HDRIs or emissive materials; clamp/refine extremes that cause fireflies.
    • Increase Retrace slightly and nudge sample size down; avoid blanket subdiv hikes first.
