V-Ray Tip: Essential V-Ray AOV Export Checklist

Exporting the right AOVs (Render Elements) is the simplest way to keep grading, relighting, and approvals fully non-destructive. Here’s a focused checklist to ensure your composites stay flexible without re-rendering.

  • Core beauty decomposition
    • Start with a predictable set: Diffuse Filter (Albedo), Lighting, GI, Reflection, Refraction, Emission. Include Specular/Coat/Sheen where applicable to your V-Ray version and shader stack.
    • Diffuse Filter × (Lighting + GI) reconstructs the diffuse component cleanly and avoids double tonemapping in comp.
    • Keep Reflection and Refraction separate for independent control of highlights vs. transmissive energy.
  • Masking that holds up in comp
    • Use Cryptomatte for anti-aliased, ID-agnostic mattes by Object, Material, or Asset name. Ensure unique names and clean namespaces.
    • Add MultiMatte for art-directed groups. One MultiMatte gives you three masks (R/G/B); set anti-aliasing on and keep IDs unique.
    • Legacy ID passes (Object/Material ID Color) can be useful, but prefer Cryptomatte for edges and motion blur.
  • Relighting without re-render
    • Light Select per key/fill/rim/environment lets you rebalance light families. Choose Contribution or separate Direct/Indirect modes for more control.
    • Use Light Mix during lookdev; once approved, “Generate from Light Mix” to produce Light Select AOVs for final renders.
  • Essential data passes
    • Z-Depth for DOF and fog; set a sensible range to maximize precision.
    • Normals (typically world-space) and World Position for relighting, edge sheen, and advanced grade isolation.
    • Velocity for post motion blur; confirm shutter settings match your camera.
    • AO via VRayDirt or VRayExtraTex as a separate pass to layer contact detail tastefully.
    • For data passes (Normals/Position/Velocity), disable texture filtering and save at 32-bit float to avoid banding.
  • Denoising strategy
    • Output a Denoiser element plus the Noisy Beauty. In comp, you can blend denoised layers selectively to preserve fine detail where it matters.
    • NVIDIA AI Denoiser is great for rapid iterations; V-Ray Denoiser offers more control for finals.
  • File format and color
    • Prefer multi-channel OpenEXR. Use 32‑bit float for beauty and data passes; 16‑bit is often fine for masks and matte IDs.
    • Keep everything scene-linear; don’t bake VFB color corrections into the saved AOVs. Save your VFB stack (or LUT/OCIO settings) separately and reapply in comp.
    • Adopt a consistent color pipeline (e.g., ACEScg or sRGB/Rec.709) across DCC, VFB, and compositing app.
  • Common pitfalls to avoid
    • Over-clamping can hide fireflies but also damages highlights in AOVs. Use reasonable Max Ray Intensity and address hot pixels at the source.
    • Check “Affect Diffuse/Specular” on lights and materials so contributions appear in the expected AOVs.
    • Name AOVs consistently to simplify template comps and automation.
