Plan your animation beats with timing charts before you place a single pose. You’ll block faster, retime less, and keep arcs and spacing clean from the start.

Timing charts map where keys and breakdowns fall and how spacing changes between them (wide spacing for speed, tight spacing for slow-in/out). Here’s how to translate classic timing charts into an efficient Cinema 4D workflow.

  • Lock fundamentals first
    • Open Project Settings (Cmd/Ctrl+D) and set Frame Rate, Scale, and Start/End frames. Consistency here keeps beats aligned across shots.

    • For complex arcs, draw a reference Spline as your “chart arc” and align key poses to it; adjust breakdowns until motion hugs the guide.

    • In the Dope Sheet, nudge keys and breakdowns to hit markers. Scale selected keys around the current time to compress/expand beats without losing spacing patterns.
    • Use the F-Curve editor to introduce slow-in/slow-out after timing locks. Keep ease areas short and intentional—avoid auto-smooth that flattens your beats.
  • Preview early, preview often
    • Create lightweight viewport previews for instant feedback. Judge silhouette, rhythm, and accent clarity before polishing.
    • Keep audio in the Timeline to validate sync while iterating.
  • Retime without breaking
    • For broad adjustments, use time scaling on selected tracks or a Time Track to preserve spacing relationships.
    • Use the Take System to branch alternative timings without duplicating scenes.
