Rhino 3D Tip: Ungroup Objects Without Altering Geometry in Rhino

When a Rhino model arrives from another designer, an imported file, or a copied library part, it may contain groups that make selection and editing feel unnecessarily restrictive. The Ungroup command is the direct way to release individual objects from a group while preserving their geometry, layers, materials, and placement.

Unlike Explode, which can break apart joined curves, polysurfaces, blocks, or other compound geometry, Ungroup only removes the organizational relationship between objects. The objects themselves remain unchanged. This distinction is essential when cleaning up complex assemblies.

  • Select the grouped objects you need to edit. A normal click on one member of a group often selects the entire group.
  • Run Ungroup from the command line, then press Enter.
  • Rhino removes the group association, allowing every former member to be selected, moved, assigned to layers, or edited independently.

A practical workflow is to avoid ungrouping an entire project simply because one element needs adjustment. Instead, isolate the relevant assembly first. Use the Properties panel to review object information, temporarily hide unrelated layers, or use selection commands to narrow the selection. This reduces the risk of accidentally releasing objects that should remain organized as a unit.

Before ungrouping, determine whether the selected content is actually a group, a block instance, or joined geometry:

  • Group: A lightweight selection relationship. Use Ungroup to remove it.
  • Block instance: Repeated, definition-based content. Use ExplodeBlock only when you intentionally need an independent copy; otherwise, edit the block definition.
  • Joined curves or polysurfaces: Geometry joined into one object. Use Explode only if separating the underlying pieces is truly necessary.

This check prevents a common mistake: using Explode on geometry that only needs to be ungrouped. Exploding a carefully constructed polysurface can create many separate faces, complicate later editing, and introduce avoidable cleanup work.

For complex imported assemblies, consider this controlled sequence:

  • Save an incremental file version before changing the structure.
  • Select the assembly and inspect what is included.
  • Use Ungroup once.
  • Test-select an individual object to confirm it is independent.
  • Move the released components to meaningful layers, such as hardware, glazing, structure, or reference geometry.
  • Regroup only the components that should continue to move and select together.

If the assembly includes groups within groups, work deliberately from the outside inward. After one Ungroup operation, try selecting a component again. If Rhino still selects multiple objects together, another group relationship may remain. Repeating the command selectively is safer than broadly exploding or deleting model structure.

Well-managed groups support quick selection and transformation, but excessive or inherited groups can obscure a model’s logic. Use Ungroup as a cleanup tool: release only what requires independent control, preserve geometry whenever possible, and rebuild a simpler organizational structure when the model is ready for production.
