Rhino 3D Tip: Set Construction Plane to Current View

Speed up drafting and edits by setting the Construction Plane (CPlane) directly from your current view.

Why it helps:

  • Aligns Ortho, Gumball, and snaps to the exact camera direction you’re working in.
  • Makes sketching on oblique parts feel “planar” and predictable.
  • Reduces auxiliary geometry and view switching during quick edits.

How to set the CPlane from the current view:

  • Command line: type CPlane, then choose View (Windows/macOS). Shortcut macro:
    ! _CPlane _View
  • Viewport menu: right-click a viewport title > Set CPlane > To View.
  • Create an alias (e.g., “CV”) that runs the macro above for one-tap access.

Keep views and planes coordinated:

  • Use Plan after changing the CPlane to get a clean, orthographic “plan” look of your new working plane:
    ! _Plan _CPlane
  • If you want all standard viewports to share the same CPlane changes, enable Universal Construction Planes:
    Options > Modeling Aids > Use universal construction planes.

Modeling aids that pair perfectly with a view-based CPlane:
