Rhino 3D Tip: Robust Rhino Offsets with Predictable Corners

Offsets seem simple until corners get involved. Here’s how to create robust, fabrication-ready offsets with predictable corners in Rhino.

Choose the right offset tool

  • Offset (for curves): General 2D/3D curve offset with Corner options (Sharp/Round) and BothSides.
  • OffsetCrvOnSrf: Offsets a curve directly on a surface; best for texture seams, panel gaps, or paths on curved skins.
  • OffsetSrf: Thickens surfaces with options for Solid, BothSides, Loose, and Corner (Sharp/Round).
  • Shell: For solids, creates wall thickness with automatic capping; useful when OffsetSrf+Solid is too granular.

Corner types and when to use them

  • Sharp: Keeps vertex intersections crisp. Ideal for drafting, laser cutting, or when you plan to fillet/chamfer later with exact control.
  • Round: Automatically adds tangent arcs at corners. Good for toolpath-friendly inside corners or ergonomic outlines.
  • Surface offsets: Corner=Sharp preserves edge character; Corner=Round helps avoid razor-thin slivers at tight transitions.

Reliable workflow for clean corners (2D curves)

  • Start with clean input: SimplifyCrv on imported or manually edited outlines; fix tiny kinks before offsetting.
  • Run Offset with Corner=Sharp to prevent surprise arcs. Use BothSides when you need symmetric walls.
  • Resolve corners deliberately:
    • FilletCorners for consistent tangency and a specified radius (great for CNC/router minimum tool radius).
    • ChamferCorners for crisp mechanical transitions.
  • Heal overlaps and gaps: CurveBoolean to remove loops at concave corners; then Join.
  • Verify continuity at critical bends with CurvatureGraph if smoothness matters.

Surface and solid thickness with trustworthy edges

  • OffsetSrf:
    • Choose Corner=Sharp for prismatic aesthetics; Corner=Round to minimize micro-edges at tight angles.
    • BothSides for symmetric shells; Solid=Yes to auto-cap where possible.
    • Loose=Yes on complex freeforms to avoid over-dense control structures; analyze results with Zebra/Curvature as needed.
  • Shell a closed solid when you need a uniform interior cavity without managing individual open edges.

Tolerance matters

  • Set a realistic Absolute tolerance in Document Properties > Units before offsetting; too tight can create microscopic segments, too loose can leave gaps.
  • After offset, run SelShortCrv and SimplifyCrv to remove fragmentary pieces that often occur at acute corners.

Problem corner playbook

  • Self-intersections after offset: Use CurveBoolean to resolve, then FilletCorners or ChamferCorners.
  • Open corners on surface offsets: ExtendSrf or ExtendCrv to meet, then Trim/BlendSrf for high-quality patches.
  • Tooling constraints: Round inside corners to at least the cutter radius; validate with Analyze > Radius.

Pro tips

  • Use ThroughPoint in Offset to match a visual target when distance is not known numerically.
  • For pattern gaps on complex skins, OffsetCrvOnSrf keeps curves glued to the surface and avoids 3D projection drift.
  • Grasshopper users: the Offset Curve component exposes Corner modes (Sharp/Round) for consistent, repeatable results.
