Rhino 3D Tip: ChamferEdge Best Practices for Manufacturable Bevels

Make clean, manufacturable beveled joins with ChamferEdge to control highlights, remove razor-sharp corners, and improve part fit.

Why choose chamfers over fillets:

  • Predictable, planar bevels that read crisply in renders and on shop drawings.
  • Fewer surface patches than fillets, ideal for mechanical parts and product housings.
  • Easier downstream fabrication: clear edge breaks, uniform deburr specs.

Core workflow (ChamferEdge):

  • Select your solid or polysurface.
  • Run ChamferEdge. Use Ctrl+Shift to sub-object select edges, or preselect edges first.
  • Set Distance 1 and Distance 2. Use equal values for a symmetrical bevel; use different values to bias the break line.
  • Enable ChainEdges when you need an uninterrupted loop around a part.
  • Use Preview to verify direction. If the bevel lands on the wrong side, Flip the edge side or swap distances.
  • Confirm Trim and Join to keep the object watertight; Rhino trims adjacent faces and adds the chamfer surface.
  • Accept to build the bevels. If any edge fails, press Esc, reduce distances, or split long edges before retrying.

Tips for reliability and control:

  • Start with conservative distances. Increase gradually to avoid corner failures.
  • Mixed distances across many edges? Set a global pair first, then per-edge override by clicking an edge again and entering local distances.
  • Tight tolerances matter. Before heavy edge work, check DocumentProperties > Units > Absolute tolerance. Typical product modeling: 0.01–0.001 depending on scale.
  • Handle corners carefully. Select all meeting edges; consistent selection order helps Rhino solve intersections cleanly.
  • Use ShowEdges > Naked Edges after the command to confirm the solid remains closed.
  • Pre-split complex intersections with SplitEdge or Split (by isocurve) to localize difficult corners.

Choosing the right command:

  • ChamferEdge: best for solids/polysurfaces; trims and caps automatically.
  • ChamferSrf: when you need surgical control between two open surfaces (no auto capping).
  • Chamfer (curves): define 2D profile chamfers before Extrude for robust, history-driven workflows.

Modeling patterns that work:

  • Do major Booleans first, then apply ChamferEdge as a finishing pass.
  • Apply larger bevels first, smaller edge breaks last (keeps solver stable and corner logic predictable).
  • For SubD workflows, add a real chamfer with ChamferEdge after converting to NURBS, or use CreaseSets in SubD and finalize with a NURBS chamfer before export.

Quality and presentation:

  • Rendered/Raytraced view: chamfers add believable highlights; small 0.3–1.0 mm (or 1/64–1/32 in) edge breaks make products read “real.”
  • Make2D and technical display modes show crisp bevel lines for documentation.
