Revit Tip: Standardize Line and Fill Pattern Libraries in Revit Templates

Consistent line patterns and hatch (fill) libraries are foundational to legible, on-brand documentation and reliable schedules, exports, and coordination.

Why it matters:

  • Reduces ambiguity across teams and projects.
  • Prevents moiré and print artifacts at different scales.
  • Improves performance by avoiding overly dense or tiny pattern segments.
  • Simplifies DWG/IFC exports and consultant coordination.

Build a standard library (and lock it in your template):

  • Line Patterns: Manage > Additional Settings > Line Patterns. Define only what you need; keep segment lengths practical (avoid sub-millimeter dashes).
  • Line Styles: Manage > Additional Settings > Line Styles. Map each style to a Line Pattern and a Line Weight that follows your plotting standard.
  • Fill Patterns: Manage > Additional Settings > Fill Patterns. Create Drafting patterns for symbolic documentation; Model patterns for true-to-scale materials (tile, brick, metal panels).
  • Materials: Assign Surface/Cut patterns in the Material Browser. Use Model patterns for real-world scale and Drafting patterns for diagrammatic legibility.
  • View Templates: Enforce graphics at the view level (pattern visibility, halftones, cut/surface patterns) to ensure dependable output on every sheet.

Naming and governance tips:

  • Prefix and classify: e.g., “A-LP-Dash-Short,” “A-FP-Drafting-Concrete,” “A-FP-Model-RunningBond-90mm.”
  • Mirror national/office standards (NCS, ISO 128) and document them in your BIM Execution Plan.
  • Centralize .pat files on a versioned network location; restrict edit rights and log changes.
  • Store all approved patterns inside your master template; new projects inherit the set automatically.

Quality and performance checks:

  • Avoid ultra-dense hatch angles or very small tile sizes that slow views and create shimmering prints.
  • Test prints at typical scales and media (A3/A1) to verify clarity and avoid banding.
  • Use halftone or lighter line weights for background elements to keep hierarchy obvious.
  • For model patterns on façades, confirm alignment with the Align tool and verify clarity in shaded/hidden line modes.

Coordination and export:

  • DWG Export Setup: Map Revit Line Styles/Patterns and Fill Patterns to CAD linetypes/hatches with matching names where possible.
  • IFC: Keep material pattern usage consistent so downstream tools read surfaces predictably.
  • Transfer Project Standards sparingly; import only Line Patterns, Line Styles, Fill Patterns, Object Styles as needed to avoid duplicates.

Governance workflow:

  • Propose — Prototype in a sandbox file; print and review at multiple scales.
  • Approve — Add to template and shared .pat repository; update documentation.
